*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

As impressed as I am with Zen. It's not really "what I'm after". Primarily a gamer, I really am looking for more speed and IPC on 1/2/3/4 cores. Hope that comes soon.

Would a zen best a 4790K in a game like Arma? or as expected will the 4 core intels still win there?

im sure the 4core zen will clock higher than the 8core?
thats normal?
but i agree it will need to for many games :)

lisa talked about it boosting up depending on temperatures, they still tuning that stuff i guess as no turbo clocks announced until release??

Dude, we have NO IDEA at the moment.

I'm guessing it's going to be very hard for AMD to actually beat Intel on performance overall. Them getting close and offering reduced prices seems like a reasonably realistic expectation. That would at least make them a relevant option again.

And I'm not sure how the high core approach will turn out, either. High core counts = lower clock speeds. And clock speed is still one of the biggest performance differentiators in many apps and games. So we'll see.

Only in blender.
Look at cinebench.

Why are you advocating that the FX83 is so slow in comparison to the i7 4770k?!

I'm all for Zen. I'm positive. Looking to buy, but if somethings iffy. It's iffy

I quoted blender , because that's all you`ve been harping on about for the last 5 pages - and I have now supplied a link in support of what others , and even yourself has said? and you deride that as well?

Wasn't your question about Blender specifically? Seems as if the Bulldozer family just isn't very good at that type of workload for whatever reason. As for performance increase, I guess you'd expect the average ~60% IPC improvement compared to Steamroller (IIRC) and another 60% improvement from SMT (based on the i5 and i7 results in the link above), so it'd be maybe 2.5x as fast at the same clock speed compared to Steamroller.

There's not enough information to get truly excited over this yet.

What's there is promising, but we need a lowdown on models, pricing and gaming benchmarks.

How exciting does it have to be then? I mean, when the only way you can get through life is on a space-hopper that you've given a horrific persona through your messed up mind whilst deluding yourself that it's still the 70s...

:p

This all comes from humbug saying that cinebench and blender are the same workload on the CPU.
I disagreed.

And this has all stemmed from that.

Problem with any AMD product is the absolute ridiculous hype and expectations get created.
This section will become insufferable now until actual launch.

I expect Zen to be good. I expect it to massively close the gap. But I'm not going to blindly accept everything.

will zen be LGA or PGA
will it be bigger or smaller
will it need a brand new cooler or will existing ones fit, with the lower wattage
will low profile ones now be enough.

PGA
Bigger?
AM4 motherboards will require new cooler mounts. Some companies like Noctua are offering these for free.
No-one knows.

would like to see what 6 core can do , 8 cores bit overkill for gaming , does zen has quad channel memory or dual channel ?
Zen itself can supposedly support up to 8-channel DDR4 RAM. I imagine most AM4 motherboards will be dual channel because few desktop workloads benefit from anything more than that.

PGA
Package is slightly bigger
Will need a new mounting system (some cooler suppliers have stated they'll give free AM4 brackets for higher end coolers)
95w quoted for top end part, low profile coolers possible

The last supposed die shot of an 8C Zen I saw had two memory controller areas. That could mean 2x dual channel or that they're single channel each. Each group of 4 cores had one. Pretty sure we'll only see dual channel on AM4, for cost and complexity reasons.

MCM packaged dies (server) will likely have quad channel.

Otoh, consumer Zen supposedly has it's chip interconnect in tact (though might be fused off for retail)... dual socket, 16c32t desktop, anyone? :D

They'd be a bit silly just sticking to dual channel, you'll find a lot of people sticking with Intel for workstations (DAWs, CAD etc) for the Quad Channel otherwise.
