*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Pretty sure we'll only see dual channel on AM4, for cost and complexity reasons.

Sad thing is, you can guarantee there will be lots of people who will see that as a negative, despite having zero use for >2 channels.

I mean, how many people went for X58 and bought a 3x2GB kit back in the day lol. I used to get so many people ask me why I only had two RAM sticks in my X79 board whenever I posted an internal system pic haha.

Martini, seems overclockers are doing the intel amd bundles now, goto rx480's and then change high to low price you'll see them.

Total £439, But remember 6600k was £30 cheaper before so would have been £425
if buying individually without the intel games. note 6700k does include the games if buying just the 6700k but it also is bumped up by £30.

i5 6600k £230 originally/ now £260.00 (Warhammer/ rainbow six only via bundle)
rx 480 g1 4gb £195.00 (free civ sid meiers)

total £425/£455

But then there would be consumer confusion. Why is this AM4 board twice the price of that AM4 board etc. One of the biggest mistakes AMD made was speccing AM3 and AM3+ boards below what the top end chips actually required. That or allowing 3rd parties to cheap out.

I'd love to see prosumer quad channel Zen, dual socket boards and the rest but AMD want to target the common ground where they can sell every chip that's fabbed

That's still a bit meh :p.
The i5 6600k is too expensive

FFS AMD are back so stop the hating and embrace a new are of high performance low cost CPUs on par with £1000 intel chips, I know I will.

We hope they are low cost that what was missing from yesterdays announcement? Also a lot here are talking about the blender render times. Iirc the AMD chip was locked at 3.4. Where as the 6900 wasn't meaning it should be even better when boosting?

I was under the impression that when utilizing all cores the Intel Chips do not boost? so it was effectively running at 3.2ghz? where as the RyZen was locked to 3.4? Am i mistaken in this?

Also i noticed during one of the demos that Thracks was showing off, on his screen with the side by side comparison, the RyZen description had a little white box over the actual window that said "Summit Ridge" or whatnot, but the Intel one was on show and this listed the actual core speed etc, so AMD was definitely hiding something there that they didnt want people to see.

Anyhow im impressed, it beats my 4770k quite handily it seems and will offer double the amount of physical and virtual cores, as long as its priced correctly its a day one purchase for me.

Hell, if it's any good maybe I'll even switch to it from my x99 setup. First i await the important benchmarks, only need a few tidy sites to test it and compare the results. No doubt Digital Foundry should do a decent job of testing game performance.

I've read that the reason the 'Ry'Zen chip was locked was because the boost function doesn't yet work properly, still plenty of time to get that nailed..

This will definitely be my next CPU, the 8c/16t variant , if the performance is where they say it is.

Only just caught up with this. Ignored Blender test, looked at Handbrake (far more relevant to my usage :p), and it looks very good. 3.4GHz base clock speed looked a tad low to me but the XFR sounds interesting, I may not bother with overclocking if this works out very well.

Please AMD, make it a reasonable price :D!

I think AMD know they need to get this right, if anything i have a feeling they are actually downplaying a lot of things to keep the hype down and then will release it into the market where it will stir it up massively. This could be a proper gamebreaking moment if they drop this around the 6700k price but offer 6900k performance, effectively they just make the 6900k and 6700k obsolete with one move no?

Only thing that worries me is this "have not nailed down the boost clocks yet" thing, with that cover up of the actual clock speeds, how do we know this chip was not running at some crazy OC with a ton of cooling in the case taming it? we dont. They have obviously tested these chips under different types of cooling as they claim they perform better the cooler you keep them, with the tech inside.

Just niggling away at me that this demo might have been with massively overclocked chips to enable it to keep up or pass the 6900k, i could be wrong and they may have been stock or whatnot in which case thats seriously impressive.

Can't take anything away from the handbrake result.
It's well used software.

That's what's maintaining my hype at the moment.

For me it was the DOTA comparison against 6900k and 6700k, it was clearly evident that the 6900k and the Ryzen both did not bat an eye at the game both being played and streamed at the same time, where as the 6700k played the game perfectly but struggled with the streaming at the same time. That to me was a good example of what the chips capable of.

I've never streamed online.

Given how popular streaming is, I'm in two minds. I don't think there's an army of people running Intel hex and octo cores.

Dota 2 isn't exactly an intensive game.

A lot of the comparison for me depends on price, I expect the zen flagship to flatten an i7 6700k going maxed out, which would be great if that's the price point, but I just can't see it being the price point.
