*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

I wouldn't pay £260 for an 8 thread CPU when i can get a 12 thread CPU for £230, knock another £100 off it... then maybe, actually no.... make the 6800K £250 and the motherboards cheaper.
Depends how interested someone is in single-threaded perf. It's plausible that the 7700K might be able to slap around the whole top to bottom range of first-gen Ryzens in ST.

No such thing as a bad CPU nowadays. The problem is the price and the number of socket Intel have pumped out over the last few years without actually increasing the performance. It will really have to slap hard to justify the price, well to me. Most people will still want the i7 simply because they don't know any better and I think that and the Nvidia nuts will keep Intel in the enthusiast market for years.

If the romoured IPC levels are true paying more for a CPU with 8 threads than one with 12 threads is in my mind idiotic, its like saying no to the 'AMD- 6850K @ £230 and instead opting for the 7700K at £260...... no ###### way!
Only the most insane of Intel fanboys would do that, and yes i know there are plenty of those around.

Agree

What i find interesting is the amount of Intel chips up for sale now on the bay and increasing daily ect the more news there is about zen the 2nd hand Intel cpu flood builds.

Those Haswel and DC chips would be worth a lot less than they would have been post Zen, as for Ivy and Sandy's, i don't think those owners care much given how long they have had them, they would probably be glad to get an actual upgrade in their price range.

And those 6800K and 6900K owners..... well they can probably afford to lose a few 100 more anyway, i doubt they care much, they will just wait for the 7900K and gladly pay £1000 for that.

I have a 4690K, did someone offer a soggy bag of chips and an out of date jogurt for it? what flavour is the jogurt?

banana

:D

.

I'm on a 4790k and I think the single thread performance it offers is still plenty, If it let's me down it's due to the amount of cores available not the speed they can manage so when I upgrade if I can get an 8/16 Ryzen cpu that can match the 4790k's level of single core performance I'll be going with that rather than whatever Intels fastest 4 core i7 is. As far as I'm concerned just 4 cores isn't good enough anymore, At least not for me.

What programs do you use? Gaming seems fine on 8 threaded CPU's still

Yeah the market has been primed for some time for a CPU like Ryzen. It seems to offer everything people have been asking for from Intel at a lower price and across a wider range of parts. Having everything on the single AM4 socket is a master stroke.

It's not just gaming at the moment, I'm compiling things and that takes hours and while it's going on other things work slower than they should, even simple things like browsing lag..

Yeah, I had to do a little work adding some drivers yesterday and I really missed those extra cores.

I used to buy the MS ergonimics in 5 bundles, i used them for years :) i found them so much more comfortable for gaming. I just wish I could find an mechanical ergonomic one.

Going back on topic the cross hair one is looking up my street :)
I cannot play games without the ergonomic one :(

Using it kind since I was in Greece, before 2003!!!! and always have an unoppened in the upstairs room, because you never know what might happen.
(eg last one had 1/3 of a pint spilt on it, destroying it on a Saturday night.......)

Given the 'C' in IPC, it's relevant how the chips' max realistic overclock compares.

I for one would turn my Ryzen build into a Kaby Lake build if both Intel did a serious price cut on the 7700K and Ryzen overclocking is mediocre.

I'm a Sandybridge-E owner (3930k) and was about to buy an i7 6900k last month when I heard about Ryzen. Since then I've been holding off.

When I saw some of the leaks for Ryzen putting it on a par with the i7 6900k at half the price I was amazed. If the real benchmarks when the NDA is lifted are the same I'll be buying it on day one even though I could technically afford to buy an i7 6900k today. It just makes sense to wait for Ryzen.

I haven't owned an AMD system since about 2006. It will be good to see them doing well again. I just hope it overclocks well as well.

Yep can't see myself getting much for my 3770k now but I've had it a while and it's served me well.
I think if I sell as a bundle I should be able to clear enough to pay for the ddr4 memory
