*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Motherboards are just getting ridiculous having lights all over the place, I noticed it with recent X99 boards you can't seem to buy one that isn't decorated like a Christmas tree.

Asus x99-WS boards, no fancy leds there and a solid board :)

It works on certain aesthetics. I have the X99 Deluxe II here, and I'm not a huge fan of the Aura implementation on it. It works really well with the Rampage, though. Remember they can be turned off.

I would guess that the majority of 4-6 core chips hit very similar overall overclocks to the 8 core chips, just not at stock.

If that proves to be the case, I'll be happy enough :) Though in my mind, there's the possibility of a 4c producing much less heat as an 8c, such that the 4c has higher overclocking potential given the same cooling setup.

Because some feel special with PS2 mechanical, and very expensive, keyboards from the 80s and 90s listening to constant clicking noise for no benefit.

That would be me. I have a USB mechanical keyboard from Filco (Filco Majestouch 2) with Cherry MX Blue switches and it is the best damn keyboard I have ever owned. The advantage of PS/2 is that it allows NKey rollover which for some people is really important (not for me though I'm not that fast at typing). Believe me once you go mechanical keyboard you never go back. Blue switches make typing so much faster and accurate than standard cheap keyboards.

Personally I can't see the prices dropping much. It would be nice to have a 8c16t at sub £300 but where does that leave pricing for the rest of the SKUs.

Well if AMD have stock to move everyone will have units to shift. After the early rush shops will have to compete and balance the books. Look at 7700K price's now compared to launch.

Edit: Just looked and you can buy a 7700K for 15% ish less than launch prices.

I've always wanted a Unicomp but couldn't justify the shipping from the USA and probable import tax.
Honestly the quality of the plastics/moulding they use is (or was) pretty iffy. Stick with what you have...

(stopping now before getting told off for derailing the zen thread!)

Zen could also be exploited by Intel. If Intel lower prices, people will look at those 7770k's at £260 (theoretically) and think, blimey that's cheap. It suddenly looks more attractive.

But it would annoy a few people who have bought one since release or recently and it would dramatically affect the resale values.

That's for the uneducated people though. Surely there won't be that many people. If I see a cheaper 7700K I'd still make sure it's best performance for the money.

It might tempt those who have a lower CPU and couldn't afford it when the price was too high.

If Intel ditch the IGP, unified sockets and drop prices 50% Yeah they're strong in this segment again.

Just reminiscing, my AMD 1700+ had a single Thoroughbred_B core, 1477MHz base clock (1.6V) overclocked to 2200MHz (1.9V).

My potential 1700 / 1700X has eight summit ridge cores with SMT, 3.6 / 3.7GHz base clock and who knows what OC?

Unlikely to repeat % OC from the previous one though.

dunno, I suspect if you can put 1.9v through it and keep it cool you probably could get the same % overclock :p for both seconds

I wouldn't pay £260 for an 8 thread CPU when i can get a 12 thread CPU for £230, knock another £100 off it... then maybe, actually no.... make the 6800K £250 and the motherboards cheaper.

I would if it beats it on IPC and clock speed (5ghz) and all I do is game. Even if games are slowly starting to become more multithreaded I reckon it would be more than sufficient for 4/5 years.
