*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

AMD are failing here at marketing, we have no benchmarks or reviews but they're putting up Pre-orders?!

Except for the multitude of benchmarks, sure. First up they showed themselves in the presentation LIVE handbrake, Cinebench and, was there a gaming one as well? Then for all the youtubers and website reviewers there is a large room with multiple demonstrations where they can benchmark Intel vs AMD in again various benchmarks and see the difference.

Interestingly another retailer has listed 1700x system pre-overclocked to 4ghz along with the 1800x stating same which we know 1800x can do anyways.
Is this a typo or is this the max overclock available? From where AMD have come to achieve what they have I wouldn't think there was much headroom left for overclocking anyway.
Perhaps 1700x is the best buy and 4ghz the probably max.

AMD would be shooting themselves in the foot, that was my first thought on all the sku combined with no cap. I presume theres differences no matter what, at least in convenience
Your core count matches your RAM in GB :D

I would argue for 2:1 ratio 16gb is the minimum for an ideal setup now imo. There is also the argument you can add later of course, longer term I dont think people will be happy with a 1:1 ratio
I moved from 6gb to 16 and 4 cores to 8, I was going for 8 on a cheap build but 16 is used easily

Yes in as few days, if you want CPU, order it now as you have free shipping to get yourself in the queue and then add other items to your basket over the phone when they appear online. ;)

Thanks G - ordered 1800x, will watch for MATX x370's in case I need the x370 to get the best out of the X models as well as fit my Corsair Obsidian 350D case.

Now to try to work out what coolers fit AM4 - are you going to update the AIO page with "am4" compatability details.

Would say, Gigabyte, wtf are they doing with pricing and market segmentation.

~£110 for a Gaming 3, relatively basic board with the lower chipset, then £200+ for the Gaming 5 and way more again for the Gaming 7. Where in the hell is there £150 X370 chipset mobo with a the extra ports, usb/sata over the B chipset but without all the trash like RGB lighting?

Crazy that pre orders are up and no full reviews.

While I'm confident AMD have nailed it this time, I'm holding out till I've read 2-3 reviews. No way I'm dropping close to £500 on a CPU until I'm sure. Don't even know whether the 1800X is worth it over a 1700 yet.

Really tempted to order... is there any big air coolers or AIO's that will fit straight out the box? and is there a better option for mobo or RAM? or should I just wait for reviews? AGH?!

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,005.95
(includes shipping: £0.00)

already have PSU, GFX & secondary storage

I only moved from 4GB on my Z68 system a couple of months ago

I'm thinking 1700x and a decent cooler may be the sweet spot.

Clock speeds tend to go up on more mature processes. It's possible that Zen+ and other future optimisations focus on clock speeds whilst staying in the TDP envelope by improving the 14 nm process they use, rather than actually changing the architecture to improve IPC. Then again, they might do both...
