*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Would say, Gigabyte, wtf are they doing with pricing and market segmentation.

~£110 for a Gaming 3, relatively basic board with the lower chipset, then £200+ for the Gaming 5 and way more again for the Gaming 7. Where in the hell is there £150 X370 chipset mobo with a the extra ports, usb/sata over the B chipset but without all the trash like RGB lighting?

Hopefully they will release a Gaming 4 at some point to plug the gap. I agree though, as someone who was looking in that ~£150 price range there is not much of a choice.

I'm thinking 1700x and a decent cooler may be the sweet spot.

Could well be right.. Till we've got some comprehensive and consistent reviews across multiple reputable sites we don't know, which is frustrating.

AMD could have had my money far sooner. I've no idea how AMD marketing department keeps screwing up, it's not exactly complicated.

The thread is in german, and even with google translate cannot find what are you talking about.

Dmaster posted at overclock.net but I dont know who he talked about because it is in german.

Look like someone at reddit understood german said it was from CPU expert called Volker who posted it on computerbase.de.

Ah I now realised Volker is CPU expert who working at computerbase.de

Clock speeds tend to go up on more mature processes. It's possible that Zen+ and other future optimisations focus on clock speeds whilst staying in the TDP envelope by improving the 14 nm process they use, rather than actually changing the architecture to improve IPC. Then again, they might do both...
I know that they will be further enhancements. You couldn't blame AMD for milking as much performance out the arch and not leaving much in the tank, but the 1700x might as some have said be the sweet spot for now at least over the 1800x. Have to wait till more info.

Yeah looks like i will go with the 1600 x roughly £250 for that.

I remember there being a leak regarding prices in the usa.. i was roughly right about it being near 400 quid for the 1700 x even it was a bundle deal.

Well we know for a fact that they should do 4.1GHz, as that's the XFR boost for the 1800X. The OCUK systems have stock OC's of 4GHz, so that must be pretty achievable otherwise they'd have to spend forever binning CPU's. Everything past that is a mystery.

Just got back home and had a look, really tempted by the 1700 but not sure if the 1700X is worth the extra.

Also, only Gigabyte and Asus boards? Will the other brands be coming later?

Gibbo seemed to hint that you can just buy the cheapest 1700 and bang it up to presumably 4 - 4.1 GHz and that will be much the same outcome as the others.

Don't see the point of the more expensive ones. The 1700 seems to offer everything the 1800X does, including an unlocked multiplier? Is it really that much more expensive for a few hundred megahertz?

The 'X' versions have XFR (auto)overclocking. I was thinking if you combine an 'x' with a decent cooler then you could just let the XFR do its thing. Would be handy to see reviews and how effective XFR is, though.

Found interesting important information from other forum warned about Ryzen very poor OC on both air and water coolers.

Also found this pic of Ryzen 1800X with all 8 cores on LN2 reached 5.1GHz at 1.853V from Austin Evans on youtube but it was removed so I found a mirror. http://mirror.ninja/5vixv8

Well 5.1GHz on LN2 at very high voltage is not very impressed, I would suggest you to put off or cancel pre-order until official reviews or you would regret sold off your good CPUs like 6700K, 7700K etc after bought a Ryzen CPU and found it cant OC at very low voltage on both air and water coolers!

Afaik Intel only managed 5.2 GHz on their 6900k chip? On a different architecture I wouldn't expect the clock speeds to be equivalent.

It's fairly transparent at this stage that overclocking is limited, so it boils down to whether this bothers you or not.
