*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Calm down, we've got differing opinions.

And I want an excuse to buy a new system? That's why I'm running a 4770K with a 290x......

If I wanted to keep my CPU, why would I change my socket?

You calm down with your "slant". You don't seem to get into your head, that no amount of deflecting changes the fact Intel changing its CPU socket all the time is not good.

You on purpose know very well most of the time AMD CPUs have had good forward compatibility with newer chipsets but make sure you twist it as a bad thing. There are blips like FM1,but for the most part you can use an older AMD CPU in a new platform as long as the pins and memory controllers are supported.

No amount of deflection changes this:
1.)AM2 Phenom II would work in AM2 and AM2+
3.)AM3 Phenom II would work in AM2,AM2+,AM3 and AM3+
4.)FM2 CPUs would work in FM2 and FM2+

Plus people with an AM2 Athlon X2 had no problems getting an AM2+ motherboard in case their old AM2 one dies.

A lot of people don't upgrade just for performance, sometimes they are happy with the performance they have but need to when their motherboard dies. No wonder when it takes several generations of releases for performance to be worth the upgrade.

Intel pushes you right into this - but you made sure your "slant" pushed it as a positive thing.

What blasted planet are you on when Haswell gets released, that literally only two meh B75 motherboards were left in the entire UK on Amazon at under £120.

WTF? I paid less for the older one which was better specced.

If it had been one year later when my mb died,I would have probably had to drop money on a new CPU too, which is why your "slant" comment is just you in a bubble.

It was the same with the other guy who was in my situation too.

Just read that review. Just wait till Friday . and expect bios updates to come out fast for all motherboards . vendors rely on reviewers doing the early tests and getting back data to test to get new bios.
Now with amd this hasn't happened . or couldn't.
And to all those that get their chips and boards, hold out a bit as you'll know you'll see good improvements within the first quarter with your systems as bios and chipset updates roll out

That one has been there since last week - the quantities have varied from 15 to 14 to 15 to 20. Someone obviously bypassed the "no-ship" clause (or 8-pack is trying the dark-side) or why would it go down to 14 from 15 - and then back again. I ordered one and the quantities didnt change so I cancelled it.

I've since ordered the same one from a local shop and will collect it tomorrow (probably first thing) so I know I have one rather than play the web lotttery for what is probably a much smaller number of boards than processors - let alone that I need mATX too.

Yeah, Gigabyte is already working on revisions 1.1 for all X370.

When has this ever happened? I can't recall any time that we've had any type of gain from bios updates and chipset drivers.

This rhetoric was used when bulldozer launched, but it doesn't need to be used here.

I should also add that i read through that review, they are using 2133Mhz memory, that is very low, i think some of those game benchmarks would be significantly improved with 3Ghz memory, especially Bioshok infinite which seems to be entirely FP dependant.
True that will make a difference but also remember the Ryzen's IMC is 95%+ efficient compared to 60-70% for intels so even though it might be running 2133Mhz its effective bandwidth will be comparable to an Intel running at 2.6-3Ghz.

People seem to be missing, the 7700k it was being tested against had 3200Mhz memory. Now if anyone needs reminding, Zen supports 2666Mhz at stock, that's it's default frequency, this was 533Mhz lower than it should have been. On the other hand 7700k only supports 2400Mhz so it was overclocked by 800Mhz.

Even if it only made a 1% difference, that could mean the 1700x beating the 7700k in 1080p by 1 fps, or increasing those min resolution tests by 10% while reducing Intel's by 10%.

The 'stock' comparison would be Zen @ 2666Mhz and 7700k @ 2400Mhz. Testing 7700k with memory way out of spec and the 1700x with memory WAY under spec is ridiculous, yet Zen was still crazy competitive.

I went through a telephone call today. All I'm doing is offering support to anyone getting or wanting to get an AM4 system.

Amd DNA has really really crippled vendors and end users . as you'll all expect Ram list on vendors lists will be small, some cases very small but will improve .

Also as an example , you all no x99 had aweful ram support. Was due to CPU not getting enough voltage for certain parts, vendors found a way around this with their OC sockets. Not saying this will happen but its always out there. Unfortunately that time Intel didn't help and was up to vendors to sort out their mess

Gibbo ordered a few thousand, 3,000 1700's but didn't say how many of the others, less... his thinking was the 1700 would be by far the best seller, whats actually happened is the 1800X was the best seller.

If thats what you ordered and not on launch day you may find yourself amongst those who have to wait on a second or even third or forth batch of orders, the later you ordered the further down the line you are.

We'll find out shortly when we get "proper" reviews.
