*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

My main issue is people jumping on leaked rubbish like this and then basing purchases on them, while this leak paints the Chip in a decent light its not the full story, infact its probably a lot better than this shoddy review....

Engineering motherboard with no updated bios causing memory issues
Engineering sample chip.
Out of date gpu drivers

You cannot look at that review as credible in any manner, but on the upside with that amount of gimping the chip is still competitive :)

Given AMDs history of changing sockets its almost a given that we'll AM4 will be with us while.
Although intel and Amd have both had 5 consumer grade sockets since around 2006

But that's ignoring AMD's recent socket history.
AM3 had no exclusive CPU's and AM3+ was just abandoned.

That's ignoring that they changed their APU socket regular. Only FM2+ was sustained.

If it gets sustained success then great.

Unless we're classing the sockets as being long life despite the complete inferiority of them?

Sockets are not important but the CPU compatibility across sockets if you use your CPU for a long time.

Outside FM1,looking at AMD CPUs and the platforms they could be used in for the last few years:
1.)AM2 Phenom II would work in AM2 and AM2+
3.)AM3 Phenom II would work in AM2,AM2+,AM3 and AM3+
4.)FM2 CPUs would work in FM2 and FM2+

The problem with Intel is highlighted by my own experiences - I am on socket 1150 still and when my motherboard died,a few years ago,Haswell had just been released. I have a mini-ITX system, and all the choice that was left under £120 was a pair of B75 ones and loads of rubbish H61 ones. I ended up with a motherboard worse than the one I originally had in many metrics.

If it had been a year later,I would probably either have had to get a totally rubbish H61 motherboard or replace everything.

Edit!!

I also got my IB CPU only a few months before.

This is just a slant turned into a positive.
I agree with certain things, but overall, differing opinions.

Supporting an older slower CPU isn't my idea of longevity.

when your only running 2Ghz vs 3Ghz it can make a significant difference in some games, significant here being about 10%

True that will make a difference but also remember the Ryzen's IMC is 95%+ efficient compared to 60-70% for intels so even though it might be running 2133Mhz its effective bandwidth will be comparable to an Intel running at 2.6-3Ghz.

What slant - stop deflecting just because you are in some little bubble being an enthusiast on a forum.

Do you want me to show you the motherboard I had before which died one month out of warranty??

Do you want me to post a picture of the replacement one??

Somebody else said the SAME thing earlier in this thread - they were in the same situation as me and ended up with a ****** H61 one.

The same goes with another one of my mates, who ended up ditching a perfectly good SB system since there were no new motherboards he wanted which were a good enough replacement.

Intel changing its CPU sockets is great for enthusiasts like you who want to make an excuse to buy new systems all the time, but for normal people its annoying since you probably will end up ditching a perfect decent CPU.

Calm down, we've got differing opinions.

And I want an excuse to buy a new system? That's why I'm running a 4770K with a 290x......

If I wanted to keep my CPU, why would I change my socket?

@Gibbo

ETA for all CPUs is now 17/03, what?!

If you order now, then that's the date.

Basically purchase orders placed last Wednesday when the ETA was 2nd March should be fine as that's based on the first/latest (at the time) stock order. Now that they've sold shedloads of Ryzen CPUs, more stock orders have been placed so any new purchase orders placed will use stock from that new stock order with a later date.
