*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

Looks like the 7700k is still king eh for gaming?

I still have plans to buy the 1600x over the i5 7600k i think it is.

Even AMD said this in their slides for games that don't make use of the threads.

I think this is a more future proof CPU, with DX12 and current-gen consoles running 6-7 threads.

The problem is, until someone (like AMD) makes more than a quad core mainstream, then developers won't optimise for it.

It's a chicken and egg scenario.

PC games make use of quads, because Intel's pricing means that what everyone buys.

It's harsh to compare single core stuff, when AMD is running around 4.0GHz, while 7700k is 4.2GHz up to 4.5GHz with turboboost. A fair comparison, in my opinion, would be to put those CPUs on par in regards to frequency, lets say 4.0GHz, and do benchmarks then. As I see, Ryzen is a crap overclocker, although it is 8 core CPU so what could we actually expect... I only hope their 4 or 6 core series are faster, at least 4.5GHz on turbo.

This was the same logic used in 2011 when the FX8150 launched though.

All this lack of overclocking with the R7 cpus makes me wonder how well the lower tier jobbies are gonna fare? Less cores/ threads, say 6c/12t as opposed to 8c/16t "might" mean a bit more overclocking headroom on the R5 range, maybe even higher on the 4c/8t cpus. If they can get more overclocking out of these mid range skus, then gaming performance should/will improve. Overall, I'd say it was/is a slightly flawed release (going by the hype, etc) but at least we now have a more level playing field with AMD v Intel and greater Choice as to where our money goes without having to sacrifice too much in gaming.

Depends on your definition of immense really. :D Immense for AMD as they really cannot afford to lose sales at this point.

True. I think that there will be a few 1800x pre-order cancellations, maybe move to the 1700. This lineup will sell like hot cakes even with these reviews due to the incredible values over Intel's lineup.

A pretty positive release, as normal there a few little bugs to be fixed over the coming month but its great to have AMD back again.

I'd like to see benchmarks from now and then again in a few months time.

These CPU's look very solid to me. It's pretty obvious that they just need a little more tweaking to get the gaming sorted because the power is there.

Based on the reviews I would have no problem with my pre-order. They are great CPU's at a fantastic price, that hasn't changed. And it's a good reentry into the CPU competition from AMD.

All I know is that I'm still looking forward to getting my 1800x albeit because I'm mostly going to use OBS and those extra cores should enable me to use better presets.

Guys regarding the gaming performances I suggest you take a look here (I know it's in French but look at the graphs):

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/956-7/impact-smt-ht.html

While it's clear that applications enjoy using SMT games don't, overall 10% less performances. The author's recommendation (as of today, things might change in the future) is for gamers to leave SMT disabled.

I'm not saying it explains everything but clearly SMT and the way the Windows scheduler works do not favor games.

He is also suggesting that the future Windows "Game mode" feature might make a big difference from that perspective, to be seen.

Posted up support memory for Gigabyte's K7 . to be honest I have to lessor boards, but its my dad off, phones playing up, and enjoying the sun with the wife.

Posted in Mobo section . goes live on their site very soon . will try to post Gaming 5 top ram speeds

The difference with that, is that they tried to do something different with the arch and it didn't work. Bulldozer was still a quad core with extra bits.

This time it's SMT, same as Intel.

The point is still that without 6 or 8 core CPUs being made mainstream, PC devs won't optimise for them.

Also a poorly ported console game might run better, haha.
