*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

35% performance boost in F1 2017 is huge, so basicaly need at least 3000mhz+ Ram, and enable perfomance mode on windows so that it stops randomly swaping cores as often and lighten the burden on the infinity fabric, in which case SMT boost performance for heavily threaded games, while it hinder it in windows balanced mode.

All this Ryzen talk is making me want to upgrade my 2600K, still not entirely convinced however and will probably wait another few weeks before making up my mind. In the meantime, is a bundle like this a good setup to go for? Primarily going to be a gaming PC,

Don't buy the Prime X370 Pro. Get a better motherboard.

Well i think i just secured a Gigabyte K7 X370 board from the MM :)
bloody board is like very hard to get anywhere lol

just need the ram/cpu now and those are easy to get :)

Got my MSI motherboard on tuesday.Took me awhile to set up but booted first time with no issues. Xmp worked for my ram, timings and 3000mhz with no problem at all. Now to OC my 1700.

What motherboards support 3200mhz ? while 1700x is clocked at 4ghz?
Asrock Taichi is working very well at 3000-3200 with 4ghz cpu. Asus CH6 is also very good at this too. The rest with extra clock gen I did not try.

Fir this configuration I recommend these two boards.

Lots of people have reported stability issues with the prime pro, on the up side they fixed the bios so it doesn't brick the board now. There are also some boards shipping with a pre ryzen bios which is just mind boggling

Hmm, it looks like I'll have a CH6 and Gigabyte K7 both with me by the end of the week. Any thoughts which one I should keep? They're both costing the same, CH6 seems to be better spec but also seems to have lots of teething issues regarding the BIOS?

Make good use of these cores. Checking out Folding@home. Nice to see 99% utilisation for a good cause.

Shall we campaign for a standard stress test like F@H stable for 1 hour. Stress testing for a good cause.

To test only CPU, go to Configure > Slows > remove GPU

Will get this board before the end of the week to try. Asrock Taichi I tried a lot and is working great.

Those who are constantly going on about maximum cpu clocks on a certain board should also consider max memory oc too. 3.8 with 3000 or above mems faster than 4g 2400 mems in almost everything infact close to 4.05g. It's clear as day 10%.... 3.9 -3.95ghz low volts with big mems is where the intelligent oc lies.

Will be great to see your findings, I'm trying to decide between the Gigabyte K7 and the Asus CH6.

The K7 has 2 less phases, but they are visibly different makes, so is that better or worse?

Also the K7 has a more impressive support list for fast RAM and claims support for 3600, whereas the CH6 only claims 3200. Could be important due to the RAM speed findings.

Also @8 Pack is it possible for you to check whether the Noctua D15 AM4 bracket version obscures the first PCI slot on the CH6? A friend has the GB K5 and it doesn't block it, JUST, but the CPU socket looks mounted lower on the Mobo on the CH6.

If this line up is true it's going to stir things up a lot:

Yeah, particularly if we see a repeat of the 1700's overclocking the same as the others.

4c/8t with more IPC than BW-E clocking over 4 GHz for ~£160? I imagine a ridiculous amount of people will be interested in that.

They shouldn't have gone 1500x to 1400. Should have been 1500, especially since clocks and XFR range is the only difference

They'll want people to avoid paying for the cheapest thinking it's worse. Just marketing. That 1400 though overclocked to 4GHz is going to wipe the floor with the i3.

The 5 claims support for 3200 yet wouldn't post with XMP settings on the exact same kit they allegedly validated that with so I would take Gigabytes memory support sheets with a pinch of salt for now, maybe with later BIOSes they will be legit.

Here lies i5

"may he rest in peace"

Seriously though, a 3.8GHz 4C8T CPU for the price of Intel's 3.8GHz 4C4T i5-7500, and a 3.4GHz 4C8T CPU for less than Intel's 3.5GHz 4C4T i5-7400 is amazing value.

Think the bricking issues are for the Corsshari 6

As for stability issues on B350 prime plus, X370 Pro, I was one of the people experiencing MANY issues with stability, which I think was down to nvidia drivers - REalbench was used for testing, which was also using GPU.

So far, I am happy enough with the X370 pro, but it's missing some basic BIOS options

I hope it can break the 4Ghz barrier easier than the 8 cores. Should atleast be cooler as a result of a single CCX, and well should be darn nice for gaming.

20% improvement over dual CCX when using one of them BF1, 3-8% in other games.
That will really help.
