*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

So it seems the CCX issue has been sorted in the latest Windows 10 updates!
Almost no difference between Dual CCX vs Single.

The R5 1400/1500X at $170/190 is going to be a stellar CPU! 4c/8t with the Wraith Cooler. Run it at 4Ghz on the reference cooler, and put the extra money towards a whole better GPU.

Especially when compared to the 7600 or 7700K.

OK so only particular games (basically just BF1) currently suffer FPS drops due to the CCX configuration. L3 latency is higher and L3 cache tests certainly take a hit but that doesn't affect other games apparently.

Before the latest updates that was a 22fps difference according to Hardware.fr Where as other games were anywhere from 3-8% differences in performance.

Considering the difference in BF1 was now 4fps for dual CCX over a single, and essentially 0-1FPS in other games, the issue isn't really an issue anymore. :D

Check the video above. There is literally nothing between them.

When he says things like "the fact that you need to base overclock to achieve 3Ghz memory doesn't make it a viable option", to me he seems like a bit of a tool, for one you don't need to "base overclock the CPU to achieve 3Ghz memory", others do it and more with the XMP profile, but even if you did, which you don't, it does not disqualify it from being an option, its like saying "overclocking the CPU is not a viable option cuz you have to increase the multiplier"

This Ryzen launch sure has weeded out all the buffoons amongst reviewers, there are a lot of them.

I don't trust him.

The odd thing is, Memory overclocks are still very motherboard dependant. Most of the reviewers that have issues with getting memory to 3000Mhz or higher are using Asus or MSI boards.

The Asrock Taichi, and Gigabyte Aorus boards don't have similar issues. Joker had his RAM at 3000Mhz on day one with his Aorus.
Level1Tech had high speeds with the Taichi as well.

On some boards you need to increase BCLK, but one other you don't.
We also cannot ignore that XMP memory has been tested and verified for Intel systems, and memory controllers. We've only seen G.Skill so far bring out AMD compatible RAM. Then again it seems most of their kits have had the least amount of issues once again also.

Level1Techs managed to get their 1800X at 4.2Ghz with 3200Mhz RAM ( 14-14-14-34 Timings) with their Taichi. This was March 8th for the video as well, and there have been other motherboard updates since then as well.

I just did :D ... i don't know, maybe i'll make a list one day, PCPer (probably no surprises there) is another one.

I couple that i like are: Jay2Cents, Linus, TPU, AdoredTV

Indeed. That's the problem with YouTube, too easy to become a narcissistic wannabe tech person. Can't stand them. Even though I find Linus absolutely loathsome and annoying, at least we know he knows his stuff.
I stick to decent forums and reviewers that have the ability to write a decent article. YouTube has a plethora of trash.

I hate that so much stuff is on youtube now.

I just want to go in to an article and find the details I want quickly.

Having said that, I also hate sites that don't index their pages of info, but go for 1,2,3, etc. Or even worse, just Next/Previous!

Computerbase.de are still absolutely Top notch when it comes to their detailed work. Just have to use the ole Chrome translator if you're not proficient in German.

I used to like Salazar Studio, but he's become really cocky lately and it's all clickbait now.

When you consider PCper came from AMDMB.com which is where I first used them a lot, it could be a bit surprising

AMDMB is an enthusiast site devoted to AMD motherboards. Site developer Ryan Shrout culls postings from Web sites and AMDMB forums that highlight current issues (Asus’s refusal to send AMDMB review products was the topic of choice when we reviewed the site). The site lives by its community orientation: AMDMB contained 18 forums dedicated to AMD issues, including nine general forums (Gaming News, Overclocking, For Sale, etc.), and nine forums on Athlon motherboards (virtually one for each compatible motherboard maker). A section of motherboard reviews includes benchmark test results, though reviews by Shrout are more comprehensive than others. And AMDMB offers a wide selection of downloadable motherboard BIOSes.

For anyone waiting on ASRock motheroards, I see this posted on their Facebook page this afternoon.

Yeah Linus is a bit annoying but yes he does know what he's doing.

Jay2Cents got his RAM to 3.2Ghz and another 100Mhz on the CPU with his Asus board after a BIOS update, apparently this BIOS is not out yet, its clear they are still working on ironing out the kinks, its improving all the time. :)

With comments like this you never know (regarding new BIOS). I was thinking, what he meant was that BIOS is not out yet as it's not on official website (but he used what everyone else is using beta from forum). And video was made prior to 1002 (which was out like the day after or something).

Oh yeah he seems to be anti AMD no doubt. I believe he was another one calling joker out for his results too. And when proved wrong said nothing.....

I forgot to order some new thermal paste. I do have 5 year old Noctua paste that came with my cooler. Do you think it's still OK to use?
it would be - I've recently used 6 or 7yr old tube of MX-2 for friends build as I ran out of everything else and temps were just fine, unless it sat in the sun, extreme heat, cold or tube wasn't properly closed I don't think these go out of date.
