*** AMD "Zen" thread (inc AM4/APU discussion) ***

I guess people believe what they want to. I cant wait till the quad cores start choking. It happened with the e8400 and q6600 and it will happen again.

Indeed.

I almost 'upgraded' to one of the hex Intel chips not long ago, but just couldn't stomach the small increase for the large cost.

This 1700 was just what I wanted.

I actually asked ocuk if they could flash the latest bios on a mobo for me so I could get the 6800k. Glad I didn't go through with it.

It will be interesting to see how Intels £350 7700k is defended in gaming when the R5 series is out in the wild.

The R5 1600X will have same clocks as the R7 1800X and in 95% of games will probably perform about the same. So a 6c/12t £250 cpu with 90% of the performance of a £350 4c/8t cpu

Even more so if the 1500X clocks to 3.9/4Ghz, how on earth anyone can justify an £160 increase in price for an i7 over the £190 1500X or even £50 over for the 4c/4t i5 7600k for that matter

The need/want fast memory has increased the cost of a Ryzen PC to the point that an X99 is looking the cheaper option as it can use any cheap RAM and still get good performance. X99 also does not care about single/dual Rank sticks, I never even thought about RAM Rank before Ryzen. That said, I don’t think the difference between running cheaper 2133 vs expensive 3200+ RAM would be a big deal most of the time.

Unfortunately the general price of DDR4 is extortionate. There isn't much difference in price between 2133/2400/2666 and 3000Mhz now anyway. Plus you don't actually need any of the expensive 3200Mhz+ ram for a decent performing ryzen system.

I also think the memory compatibility problem will be sorted eventually so you wont need to go hunting around for even more expensive samsung chips etc

The comparable x99 CPU costs more than the CPU, Motherboard, and top end RAM.

Yes, it is but X99 will have very similar performance with the cheapest 2133 RAM vs expensive RAM (it was like that when I last checked). I'm not saying X99 is the better option or Ryzen does not perform well, I just think the "it needs fast memory" has been over stated as I ran mine with 4*8GB dual rank Crucial 2133 @1833 on a MSI B350 at first and performance was good, only noticed a small difference in benchmarks vs X370 with G.Skill 3200.

Yep. Before I bought my 3570k I waited for bulldozer to launch before making a decision. For games the 3570k was better so I went with that. But this time round I needed a worthwhile upgrade from my 3570k and a 7700k although blazingly fast the allure of a 8 core 16 thread chip was too much. The 1700 was the Bulldozer I never bought.

Also I noticed that recent AAA titles had 8 core chips down as recommended (4790k & 8350) and the fact they where listing the 8350 long side the 4790k I deduced what they meant was an 8 thread cpu so the time for a Ryzen was right.

When the next gen consoles launch the time for the i5 being the sweet spot for gaming will be close to the end. My thoughts are you will need a CPU with at least 8 threads.

Looks like MSI support has gone downhill as far as bios updates go. Just check out their forum.

They've stopped giving out beta bioses and don't appear to show any urgency in producing more.

I hope no one purchased the Titanium.

Seriously cannot make up my mind which RAM or motherboard to buy for an R5 1600. D'oh!
g skill ripjaws 3000mhz cl14, from what i've read its still samsung b die, and i got mine for 115. Still waiting on parts tomorrow, so wont be able to confirm what i've read online about it yet, but seems like great value. One person on reddit overclocked theirs to 3200mhz without adjusting timings.
I ordered an asrock taichi just for aesthetics, but the gigabytes come with dual bios' which is good to have, and the msi tomahawks review well. When the taichi went out of stock i was set to buy a tomahawk arctic, but the taichi came back in stock here on saturday morning

With the same way they will try to justify the 8core skylakex £1000 price tag, even if it won't overclock beyond 4.2ghz, while having 50% higher tdp.

The main reason i swapped my tomahawk for a crosshair. Support was abysmal, the reply i got was barely in English and pretty much told me tough deal with it.

One tangible you get for the +£50 to £100 ASUS tax on the Crosshair is a sizeable enthusiast user base and support effort by techs.

Meanwhile over at camp gigabyte the ab350 gaming 3 is still officially on launch day BIOS :o

gonna bang them another email to see if there is any more betas I could try out. The memory cold boot issue is a bit of an annoyance to say the least.
