AMG GT R - Der Tag

A few of my friends have gone the old M3 route of late for fun and track days, usually with the famous (but utter crap) line of "I am going to keep it standard" at which point they then throw the buy price again at the car in upgrades.

I think my car was probably the perfect car for the trip actually and several said it was their choice. I did bottom it awfully on one shot cut we all took, the noise nearly making me cry like a baby. Then followed by people laying on their backs telling me "stop being a tit Housey, it's fine" whilst patting me on the head with comforting 'there there's'.

And less risk of the impending shame of a hard shoulder breakdown, at least for some of those cars (*cough* McLaren) :D
We had 2 flats on the trip and both were sorted with phone calls and money. Not easy with cars like this, not like popping into Quick Fit with a Ford Focus.

The cars were....

2 x E92 M3's
1 x Mustang Mach 1
1 x AMG GT-R
1 x McLaren 720S
2 x Ferrari 488 GTB's
1 x 992.2 Turbo S Cab
3 x Ferrari 812 GTS
3 x Lambo Performante (2 x soft tops, 1 x hard top)
1 x Ferrari Portofino
1 x Lambo Urus
So it was you lot that were there. I was going to come down to the hotel when I heard about that delivery but thought it was a bit nosey :o

Edit: sorry, wrong hotel, was a couple of lorry loads delivered to an Inverness hotel last week. Looks similar.

I thought I would do a small update for those who are interested, not least as I close in on 10,000 miles added in my ownership. I love the car and it is the best car I have ever owned, taking the crown from my old GT3. I was advised by a few friends who know me well enough that it was "the car for me" and they were right.

A special car, massively quick on all but the wettest and coldest days and instills a level of confidence in the dry I have got from no other car. I have done some great road trips in the car, not least my Scotland road trip posted elsewhere, which gave me a good chance to run with 4 or 5 properly rapid drivers on the best roads in our country. I would not have changed my car for a single car on that tour it was epic.

I also popped to see my mate Jack who does the Number27 videos on YouTube. I let him drive the car and we took it across the road that Harry Metcalfe uses for his videos. I then drove it back at pace and he said he had never seen any car do that road as quick. Left foot braking means you can pivot the car and added to four wheel steering it makes a big car feel very small.

It has not been all glory though. As mentioned before I had to have suspension sensors replaced just after delivery after I got a message on the dash. First time I opened up the car on a bumpy road, annoying but fixed under warranty (£4K).

It also throws sensors on occasion and twice when hitting the rev limit (used to a V10) it went into limp mode, somewhat disconcertingly. Turing it off and on again fixes that, but lesson learned. Both times were due to it not picking the next gear when I pressed the right paddle too!

First service and Mercedes Macclesfield decided to overfill the oil, a pet hate of mine, so were told to take it out. Why garages do this is beyond me, but first 3-4 times my old M3 was done it was overfilled, even after I had told them to be careful.

New tyres 2K miles back were close to £1500 for MO Cup 2 but are immense when up to temp and 15mpg average in my ownership means it's thirsty, though 580bhp and 700nm torque that is hardly a surprise.

The noise it makes turns me into a little kid and none of my cars have got the love (bar one dweeb in an A3 a few weeks back) that this car gets. Women love the thing, I have had SEVERAL stop me to talk about the car, one in the middle of the road as I gave way, another in Scotland who pushed passed all the Ferraris and Lambos to get to her 'dream car'. Nice part of the ownership is getting little kids in the seat and there will be a few social media pics out there I suspect of kids in my car with proud mum and dad taking photos.

So all in all great, fun and enjoyable car to own.

So what i'm taking from that post is that this is a girls car...
It does get a disproportionate amount of female interest. No idea why, they just seem to really like it to an extent where they come up and talk about it. Never had that with another car, they must smell I am divorced.

Shame there isn't better build quality in the bits you can't see, at least from what you've reported.

Stunning car though, definitely on my want list. I don't think I'd drive it much though, just wash it and stare at its beauty.

Are you going to let him do a video review? I'm a subscriber of his, enjoy his channel mainly for the mechanical stuff, but it would be great to see a piece on your car.

That was the thought at first, but it's not really his demographic. We may do one at some point, I think it impressed him greatly but I took a work colleague to meet him who was follower too and who is building up a BMW 2002 which I suspect will be his thing. Glad he didn't have a camera in when we drove cross country

Beautiful car

I think this is my next car. I’ve test driven a few “potentials” recently, and all have left me feeling a little underwhelmed, mainly because the C63 is just such a damn good car that the bar has been set really high.

But the more I test drive other stuff, the more I come back to the idea of either a GT R or a GT63s, with the latter being the more practical and “sensible” option given I have 2 kids. Every time I see these though, they just get better and better. Pictures do not do them justice

I’ll keep the C63 for a couple of years yet I think unless something miraculous happens with the used car market prices or GT R prices in general
