An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Two disadvantages to FT: the one stated above (no looting) and also you can't get the athletics and acrobatics experience you get from bunny-hopping across the landscape.
But with Oblivion's leveling/scaling system, if you're not a thief/assassin type character, then you don't want to be leveling up purely through acrobatics and athletics, unlike in Morrowind.

BTW, am I the only person playing someone honest? Everyone I hear talking about this game (and MW) seems to revel in being a thief and/or murderer. Is there something troubling people??
Nope, I'm a good guy as well. I mainly just explore and do Fighters Guild quests atm.

I do, however, have a secondary thief/assassin character, which I must admit is quite fun :D

Can anyone tell me which setting i need to put down to stop the game from lagging when there is an open flame in my view? can be real annoying espically in a fight with multiple creatures all casting flame spell my fps drops right down almost like bullet time.

Try reducing shadows? Internal and external..just a guess!

Aghh I just reformatted and installed fresh drivers and now oblivion won't load, it does the black "Bethesda" screen then just errors out. Nooooooo. :(

Using Omega 3.8's. they worked fine yeterday!

Just finished the MQ at level 23 after about 76 hours gamplay. Is it me, but was the MQ rather dull - just a lot of hack'n'slash. At least MW had some weird stuff (find a bride!). A couple of loose ends to tidy up, then on with my new Kajhiit.

i think its is going to be the one downfall with the game as far as i can see...
i'm all for having good weapons early in a game... but when you get weapons that are pretty damn near the best weapons in the game (which the glass ones are... i believe only the Daedric ones {which are pretty heavy} and the Goldbrand sword are better) it puts the sense of accomplishment out of gaining the good weapons.

took me an absolute age to get the Glass armor/weapons in Morrowind, and the Daedric ones too... you had a real sense of accomplishment and you felt proud you'd got them after spending so long playing the game.

hopefully the vast amounts of quests/sub quests etc... are enough to keep you going... but theres not much to gain once you've already got the best weapons... apart from levelling up.

whats the rest of your system like mate? if you've only got a Radeon 9250... chances are the rest of your pc isn't up to scratch either :(

System will handle game ok - jus the GFX card is crap

Pentium 4 3.06 Ghz, Abit IT7 MAX 2 v2.0, 1 GB PC2700 RAM, 2 X 160 GB 3 x 40 GB, 10 meg Net Connection.

Just got lousy Gfx Card.

I can use the nifskope its just finding out how to use the CS to make it avalable ingame
ah i think i can help you there.. to hell if i could make a model/texture though, nice one. tomorrow i'll knock up a tute for you as i'm a bit tried and drunk atm so if i try to explain now it'll end up a mess..

but if you have got the .nif, the texture .dds, the bumpmap(?) _n.dds and maybe an icon .dds perhaps? (the latter is optional but is a cherry on the cake if you have one) then your ready to rock, your 99% done..

My playing time is 17 hours and I am only at level 4, am I doing something wrong or is that normal?

I think that's a little low...what's your character stats? Maybe you're using your minor skills atm, and not major? Or just wondering around not killing/interacting with stuff?

It all depends on the quests that you are doing, there are a lot of simple "go and speak to" or "go and find me this" type quests which do not really give you chance to utilise any real skills, it would be easy to play for 17hrs and still be at level 1 IMO. Everyones game is different so I wouldn't worry about it :)

If you feel you should be higher, look into your major skills and focus on quests that you think will utilise them :)

I wouldn't worry about it. The game experience remains almost the same at whatever level you are at. You just get better stuff at higher levels (but so do your enemies).

The only benefit to levelling up IMO is that some of the quests require a higher levelled character to initiate them.

True, I found most of the Daedric shines (which are lvl dependent) before I found Imperial City, but levellled up like a dingbat doing so. Got distracted by the beauty of the landscapes when I came out of the sewers!

Edit: use your major skills to level up faster, making sure at least one of them is an offensive skill.

I already found a quest I need to be level 5 minimum :(

I have done plenty of quests so what can I do to level up a bit faster?

Look at your skills page (press the tab key, select the health/magika/fatigue bar stats page, then go to the third tab in that), and have a look. The skills in the top section are your Major skills. Each time you increase one of those it puts you closer to levelling. Just keep working away at stuff relating to those is about all I can suggest.

My Battlemage's major skills include Destruction, Conjuration, Block, Blade and Alchemy. For me these skills get used regularly as they're part of my classes modus operandi, combat focusses around summoning a helper, firing off a few fireballs/electric bolts/whatever, then going in with a sword. Then I just make sure I gather ingredients wherever I am and produce potions galore.
