An extension build

Watching this thread closely as due to break ground with our extension in September. Excited and apprehensive at the same time.

Looks good! 2 bolts for that span does seem a bit mad. My structural engineer specced 4 but then my builder got it wrong and put 2 in.... Oh well not too much of a span for me and structural engineer said it would be OK.

Mine was bastardising an existing extension that hadnt been opened up as much as I liked.

Some pics below if interested.

do you sleep well at night?
i don't know how well i would, knowing that the beam is at half its intended strength

Its what they call in engineering redundancy in a connection. I'm not concerned and there's only a 1.3m or so span into a fireplace.

The engineer confirmed it was suitable so hey. I've seen worse for sure.

That’s lovely. Nice and airy. Looks like you had plenty of garden to extend in to too!

Week 6 came to a close, and week 7 has begun. The bolts are still holding. Pray for me.

The outside looks more or less the same really, not much going on there.

The back door has been moved, and the old hole where it once stood is boarded up, ready for a window installation later on.

The new back door entrance goes to a utility room, which serves as a corridor to the rest of the space, as well as a place for the boiler, tumble dryer and washing machine to sit. This partition went up last week.

Here's the other side of the utility room, opening out in to the new space. A lot of first-fix wiring and plumbing has gone on, and plasterboarding has started. Now that partition is there, it's given us a better idea of the space that's open to us.

All that's been insulated and plasterboarded, and a hole is behind that external wall which is going to be used for ducting out cooking smells when the extractor fan goes in to the ceiling.

More holes to be made this week, hopefully the last of the destructive stuff, then it's time to build it up, rather than knock it down!!

Where are you located as well mate?

Looking good so far, I do like the idea of the LEDs on the steels
North Somerset.

I have started looking at LED strips and intumescent paint for the steels. Quite an exciting prospect. Wouldn’t have thought of it before this thread!

I would have thought they would have built the extension in line with the side of the property so there would be no pillars between the old property and new extension but I suppose it comes down to money. Still looks good though.

May not be possible due to the structure and the size of the steels required (even if it could be done) would also be (I'm assuming) extremely expensive
