Hmm looks like Im getting one for my parents - thinking it would be a great device for the technically challenged for surfing the web, having some music on it and using the apps I have on my iTunes account...

Just wondering if others are buying for the same reason - a Touch would be fine but with their age something larger with a bigger screen size makes far more sense...

Definitely going to consider it for my mother. She only browsers online for shopping and sends the occasional email and the current PC she uses is about 4 nearly 5 years old. It has been infected with viruses a few times and she's confused by the start menu and the address bar in Firefox. So the iPad could be the perfect replacement. Hopefully the shopping sites she uses will update their sites, so they no longer display product images in Flash.

Yeah sounds about the same usage as mine if not probably more - email is still alien to them so need to make that as simple as possible...

It definitely seems to fit the bill as I think a laptop just wouldnt be opened and has far more chance to be used incorrectly :p

BTW iPad related - any idea about docks and the like? Presume there will be one specific for it but what about current equipment that has iPod shaped holes. Wondering if theres such a thing as a iPod connector extension cable to retrofit current equipment (does such a thing exist?)...

P.S. mr.sly - which one you getting? Cant see how the base Wifi model doesnt fit my needs, though always easy to upsell myself so trying to not do that since Im not the end user)

It uses a standard 30 pin dock connector, you could easily make or buy an extension cable :)

Anyone know the deal with the 3G version yet? As in contracts/ per month basis? Prices?
I'm still a bit lost as to what's going to be available. :)

Sorry but that made me laugh. You're thinking of buying her one to use with websites that extensively use flash, then make it sound like the shops are the problem? I can't see many companies "updating" their sites any time in the next few years tbh, the minimal number of iPad users and iPhone users (considering all other smartphones and slates do/will have flash) won't be worth their bother. The only sites I can see doing it are apple specific ones or those owned by iPad users. :p

this, its going to be rubbish if it doesnt support flash, whats the point

The shops are the problem, along with Adobe. iPad or no iPad there's no reason to be using Flash for such a thing. There's plenty of people who don't have Flash for accessibility reasons and they're blocking out those people from accessing their site just because they hired a lazy developer.

Flash is dying a slow death, hopefully Microsoft will hold out and won't include it on the Windows Phone in the future.

The shops are the problem

So what your saying should happen is that literally millions of websites should stop using flash and redo their websites so they will work with the iPad because that would be easier than Apple just allowing flash to run on their hardware with a simple software update

I think they should redo their websites to work with the vast majority of mobile phones on the market with internet capabilities, the iPhone, iPad, Windows Phone 7 Series, any user who doesn't have Flash installed because of the security vulnerabilities and any user with accessibility needs that Adobe don't care about. That doesn't mean they should use Flash on their sites, but it shouldn't be reliant on Flash.

Or Adobe should make flash secure, use less resources, admit that it's riddled with bugs and fix them, make it usable for people with accessibility needs. Then I don't think anyone would have any problems with it.

I'm going to guess Adobe won't do that though seeing as they won't even admit that causes the vast majority of crashes in browsers today.

The vast majority of smartphones do have flash capability, as will the vast majority of tablet/slate devices similar to the iPad. WP7s is likely not to have flash on release but the last I heard Adobe was working with MS for it to be implemented after release (or before depending on how it goes). That leaves iPhones and iPads the only devices that can't. Considering the number of pageviews by phones of most websites there really isn't enough to bother about, especially considering a large proportion of them will be able to view flash. TBH about 95%+ of people can view flash, there really is no point in changing it (and probably spending a lot of money in the process) for the few that can't.

So people with disabilities shouldn't be able to view websites properly just because of lazy developers? And because 95% of people can view Flash, we should forget about people with disabilities? Forget about the security issues with Flash? Forget about the performance issues? Forget about the bugs that cause the majority of browser crashes?

There's no reason at all product images should be in Flash. And there's no reason 99% of websites should be reliant on Flash to work and provide the desired content to the user. Flash should be an added extra not the foundation of a site.

No, what i'm saying is that it is up to the developer/site owner to decide what their site should look/work like.

You also mentioned shops, which make money, and it's their decision whether they want their site in flash and able to reach the vast majority or in something else and reach all people. Their thoughts in replacing flash on their websites will be "is it economically sensible", are they going to make any extra money, and if so is it going to be more than the cost of recoding the site + the effort in doing so. For the vast majority of shop owners that's unlikely (in fact i'd suggest only shops catering for Apple owners may actually be worth while).

It's up to them to decide what software/coding they support, it's up to the hardware manufacturers (in the case of closed systems) to then let people view it.

I do think that not supporting flash is a big issue for the iPad. Flash may be problematic but it is used on so many websites. The web experience on the iPad will be limited without supporting it. Anyone buying the iPad will have to accept that this is what they will get. I will probably get one as I see the iPad as being more than just a web browsing device. Apps, music, videos, photos, etc. I doubt Apple will do a U turn on Flash and I do not expect many websites will change to Flash-free. This battle will go on for a while yet. Years no doubt.

As with all their stuff I'll hold fire until it's released and I get to play with one, but in all honesty it looks like they've dropped the ball.

I only mean dropped the ball as far as making something that's actually useful - it'll make them pots of money. I just fail to see any real point in it, apart from as a device that will be hugely useful when I'm having a poo and completely redundant the rest of the time.

Quite interesting a lot of folk here and other forums seem to know what the consumer wants even more so than Apple. I mean come on it's not like Apple isn't a success story and yet we have individuals feel they simply know more. I'm pretty confident that it's going to do pretty well. It's not just another netbook (thank god), marketplace is riddled with this horrid looking devices. I try to avoid flash wherever possible and haven't missed it greatly at all. Apple got it right with the iPad and I'll be picking up two very soon I hope!

Wait, what?

So i'm not allowed to make my choice and explain my reason? Apple obviously know better than me my own needs? ;)
