According to Engadget's latest article we have some new info on Gingerbread. Seems FroYo will remain on lower end phones but those with 1GHz CPUs and at least a 3.5" screen as well as 512MB RAM should be inline for the update.

At least I'm certain the Desire will last the 24 months I'm on contract for then :p

Android 3 notesL

- 1280x760 support
- Completely revamped UI unlike any current Android version
- System requirements! (see link)

Exciting times for the majority of us who have Snapdragon phones then :p

oooo interesting. :D

Might as well stick with my Magic and wait till I can upgrade in October.

Obviously BS. I doubt they will make the Nexus One obsolute in less than 10 months.

edit:

Ooops, 1280* support. Not requirements.

1280x720 for tablets and screens larger than 4" :)

I can SMELL an iPad pwnerer right there.

Apparently it's going to kill off third party UIs altogether... not sure how i feel about that, but i do think those requirements are a bit high.

They're not killing off the likes of SenseUI.

They're killing off the requirement for Manufacturers to bake their UIs into future Android updates like currently (2.1 to 2.2 for example and SenseUI).

Android 3 is modular so core components, Android apps and so on are said to be individul and not a part of say SenseUI.

I guess they're following the the footsteps of Windows where the core can be updated endlessly but the Visual Style remains customised by the manufacturer.

This way OTA updates go out to everyone at the same time.

Why are the requirements 'a bit high' if it would mean the phone ran slow if it didn't meet them? They are basically saying "these are the requirements to run it properly and if you don't meet them we don't wan you to run it and then complain it's slow"... which people inevitably would!

Anyone think the date may be in response to a certain new phone OS coming out at an almost identical time...? :p

Looks like it may be interesting, and it looks like they are finally learning from WinMo in the same way MS are (Hardware requirements) so less fragmentation.

So is the X10 going to struggle? 384 MB RAM

EDIT - never mind, so the X10 is unlikely to get it (but get 2.1 around the same...hhhhmmm)

theres no way gingerbread will be out in august/sept or infact anytime this year imo. just look at froyo which 'came out' a good few weeks ago. whos got that installed without modding ?

anyway this is engadget + rumours + 6 months early , stop worrying and wait for some proper news. cant imagine SE ever doing it anyway , the only way would be by modding

elsewhere devs are thinking its more likely to be 512mb rom rather than ram anyway. due to the way the new android is supposedly going to be set out in separate components

on another note , surely by the end of the year google need to move towards 3d acceleration a bit more ? since the iphone and windows 7 plan on making good use of it
