According to Engadget's latest article we have some new info on Gingerbread. Seems FroYo will remain on lower end phones but those with 1GHz CPUs and at least a 3.5" screen as well as 512MB RAM should be inline for the update.
At least I'm certain the Desire will last the 24 months I'm on contract for then

 They are basically saying "these are the requirements to run it properly and if you don't meet them we don't wan you to run it and then complain it's slow"... which people inevitably would!
