Don't see how that will be possible as I am pretty sure that all the OEMs (especially the companies who have LOADS of devices like Samsung and Sony) will not want to spend time and money updating old phones, heck they don't even want to provide the smallest of android updates i.e. 4.1 to 4.2 :o

Unless.......google can somehow provide an OTA update without OEM's involvement but again that just brings a whole ton of problems in if they do that.

Also, I don't think google are concerned about the fragmentation issue:

EDIT: arsetechnica has a better article

Google play services is the answer.

I think I preferred KLP, even though I've never tasted it. But I'm mostly disappointed that its 4.4 rather than 5.0, as I was looking forward to a big update, and I do prefer kitkat chunky.

Great news! That is more or less what I have been saying for the last year or two now :p Definitely the best method and just let OEMs and networks take their sweet time updating their skins.

Although still curious to see how they can avoid problems as am sure that there must be some stuff that will conflict with OEM's optimisation and custom skins.

UP YOURS HTC, SONY, SAMSUNG ETC.! :D :D :D

The OEMs won't go for it though. They want the ability to customise the software.

From what was said in the article linked above, OEMs won't be able to touch/modify it at all! :D

Play Services has system-level powers, but it's updatable. It's part of the Google apps package, so it's not open source. OEMs are not allowed to modify it, making it completely under Google's control.

Plus from my understanding, this will only affect the base/core of android, not OEM's skins.

Best thing would be to release as an ultra barebones OS with almost everything else downloadable and upgradeable through the store  Google controlled updates for everyone :p

That was more or less my thoughts too :p Kind of like the google experience devices except you have easy software to use in order to flash a stock android ROM without having to faff about with unlocking etc. Just plug the phone in and load of the files and hit flash, job done.
