was in hmv looking at the anime section and nothing realy stood out. so looking for suggestions, i prefer the kind of sci-fi ones rather than the martial arts, swords and knives type.

so far i own, akira, ghost in the shell, blood:the last vampire (that is dreadful), ninja scroll, neon genesis evangelion, death and rebirth and i bought virus today.

i was looking at ghost in the shell: stand alone complex today, how good is this?

Dominion Tank Police, and New Dominion Tank Police.

Shirow stuff, he made Ghost In The Shell and Appleseed, top stuff.

Actually, Appleseed too. Neither Tank Police or Appleseed are deadly serious, but they're not comedy either, it's a really good mix.

Recommendations:

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 - Cyberpunk, futuristic, robots, excellent soundtrack
Martian Successor Nadesico - Sci-fi, spaceships, humerous

There isn't much on offer in shops like HMV, or in the whole of the UK tbh, you can download free and LEGAL fansubs from [I removed the link myself :p] using bittorrent.

If you're going to check out some of the fansubs, I highly recommend Naruto, get it now before it's licensed and turned into a kids anime by ADV.

Ghost In The Shell: SAC is excellent, very good quality animation.

GITS:SAC isn't that bad i'm enjoyig it quiet a bit. Theres a big story line but not all the eps are connecteted to the main story. its different from Gost in the shell Movie its an alternative.

If your after a romatic comady sort of tragic anime try Fruits basket, excelent show only 4 dvds long but still great.

[NO WAREZ]

I believe Fan subs are classed as illegal or should be treat as such from what i've been told.

[THEN PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE WAREZ LINKS!]

both ghost in the shell series' are excelent, you mentioned evangelion... if you havnt seen the series check that out.

other good series i found are cowboy bepop (space bounty hunters) and trigun (futuristic western)... ninja scroll series is also pretty good.
ohh yea.. and macross plus (more sci fi)

as was said dvd's in the uk is a pretty poor choice, importing from the east via auction sites is prob the best

Unlicensed anime fansubs are perfectly legal, which is why I offer them on my own site.

link removed as the site has a lot of fansubs etc, which are technically illegal

Naruto is amazing but not sci fi.

Naruto is fantastic, one of the most enjoyable series I've seen in a long time, and over 110 eps long so far, it just keeps getting better.

No, it isn't Sci-Fi, it's a ninja anime, though rather less serious than the likes of Ninja Scroll and Samurai Champloo. :p

How many have you converted to the anime darkside Pixel?

Other Sci-fi suggestions :
1) Blue gender - seems to be 50/50 you either love it or hate it.
2) Cowboy Bebop - classic
3) Crest of the stars / banner of the stars - (Region 1 only probably by great sci-fi space opera :D )
4) Zone of the enders - Mech Scifi.
5) Full Metal Panic - Mech sci-Fi Romance.
6) Dot Hack Sign - interestin concept viewed from with in a game.

I'd try 2, 5, 6 first.

cheers guys, ill look into those, there are a few places in glasgow that have a decent selection so ill check what they have before i go ordering from the east.

Hellsing is awesome. Its a vampire series and i think its only about 15episodes long, so you can watch it all pretty quickly.

At the moment im watching Ghost in the shell : SAC and am awaiting to see the film innocence, ive been told the animation is out of this world :D

Films like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Wonderful Days, Blood : the last vampire are all really good and i find they take me out of the world while im watching them :D

edit: ive just read the first post properly  . I liked Blood, its mainly the style i like rather than plot though.

The thing I love about it is the humour and sadness it mixes together so well.

What fansub are you a fan of?

ive only ever seen vampire hunter d and dominion tank police (when it was shown on scifi channel) but would prolly watch dom tank police again. Got akira too, but never watched it... i dont have enough free spare time for films at the mo.

I usually download the DattleBayo fansubs because they're always first to be released, but after I've watched it, I get the better quality AonE versions. :)

ive got spirited away and watched princess mononoke and loved them, contemplated getting kiki's delivery service today but decided against it. blood was stunning visualy, the plot was just dire.

Angelic Layer
Azumanga Daioh
Chobits
El Hazard
*Golden boy
Haibane Renmei
Hand Maid May
Mahoromatic series 1+2
Tenchi (Muyo is best, but Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are still good)
*Those Who Hunt Elves 1+2
Video Girl AI
Witch Hunter Robin
Wolf's Rain
X (TV)
Ayashi no Ceres
I My Me Strawberry
*Kiddy Grade-
*Najica Blitz Tactics (good, but very OTT with upskirt panty shots, almost to the point of being TOO OTT)
*Outlaw Star
*Raimuro senkitan (be careful of the bum waving maracas in the outtro)
*Saikano
*Scrapped Princess
violinist of hamelin
Piano
Noir
*Slayers
*Escaflowne
*Lain (be careful)
*Now and Then, Here and There (Dont let anyone interrupt you)
Trigun

films:
Laputa castle in the sky
Metropolis
tonari no totoro
grave of the fireflies (must see, but dont let anyone interrupt you or it'll spoil the atmosphere)
perfect blue (must see)
any other film done by "studio Ghibli"

i think there's enough there to last you a year without ever having to watch anything other than anime
also, i apologise for the changes in alphabetic order, i had to change hdd browsing and also dvd/cd/vhs collections
and most of these fit into the catagory of not being martial arts (TWHE has karate man, but it's mainly a comedy series)

the * titles are ones that fit closest to your preference, but ALL of the others are still worth watching. many of them are cute schoolgirl/love/AI love stories, comedy, or a mixture of everyhting (which is what makes anime great)
