ANNO 1800

Quick questions: Will the top 10 mods listed above work with just the base game?

Also any advice re: performance?

It seemed to struggle a bit with my old set-up, 3060ti 8GB, Ryzen 2600, and 16GB sys RAM when I played a while ago, put about 200 hours in.

Currect specs:

6700XT 12GB, 5700X, 32GB sys RAM.

Cant help you with mods as I have not checked those out. However, my spec is, i54690k @3.50ghz 16gb ram and GTX970 and it runs perfect for my needs. A little juddery when scrolling around the map but everything else is good.

Seems to work OK on my laptop, unsure on specs but way less than them.

Later on it does slow down a fair bit IIRC, also it depends on what angle you're viewing things from. For note I've got a 3060ti, 11600k and 32gb vram @1080p, and if you look across your island with a shallow angle the fps does drop, and later on when there's things going on all over the place the fps drops too. Not enough to bother me though - i think i generally run it at 48fps as it's smooth enough for me and lowers my pc power/heat by a decent amount.
I have seen anno using over 20gb ram though, and that was without mods. Whether it actually *needs* to or not, I don't know.

just got back from school run, not sure if I can check without playing it to unlock it via quests or not.

You'd need to play for a bit, IIRC if you do a multiplayer game you don't have to go through the story (not sure if there's a way to disable it otherwise) and it's just a case of who can get a ship over there fast enough. Does mean you can't speed up the game though!

what exactly is the expanded new world map?

what exactly is the expanded new world map?
Looks like it is part of the dlc according to the wiki. It's an expanded map with extra islands and one much bigger island with a hydroelectric dam construction project, this gives a good, if somewhat small, picture of the difference in the map.

I fancy this but I have a bit of an attention span issue. I've got Anno 1400 and quite like the sandbox mode.

Is this one bit of a faff? Or is it nice and easy to get the jist of?

The older Annos are a bit of a different. You have multiple islands on one map, 1800 has multiple islands on multiple maps. I think by default there are 2 regions old/new world. There's also the arctic, enbeza and cape (another old world region) which i believe are all dlc maps. So you might find that there's a lot going on a bit all over the place. That said, generally you don't need to keep flicking between different things if you don't want to. The general gameplay is similar however, though there is now a workforce mechanic which means you need to have enough of each tier of population to keep your building running, on each island.

Is it better than 2205? I wasn't impressed by that.
It's a bit of a mix between 2205 and the previous annos IMO. It is better, probably the best anno to date.

Cool, added to wish list, thank you.

Tempted to get this. I do like world building etc, anyone got some tips for a total beginner?
  • Set building refunds to full - allows you to learn the game without be penalised for not knowing anything
  • Possibly turn off pirates - They're good to have on, but if you annoy them they will start sinking your ships and destroying your supply lines. I'd advise you turn them off to begin with.
  • Expand to new regions as fast as you can - there are triggers for the AI to expand, but they can and do expand before you've got to other regions. So if you wait too long you find the islands you want/need are gone.
  • Don't upgrade all houses just because you can - you need pop of different classes to maintain different buildings. E.g Making bread you need a grain farm -> flour mill -> bakery. Grain farm and flour mill both use farmers (tier 1 pop) bakery uses workers (tier 2 pop).
  • Production buildings need to be in range of 'something' for them to work. If i take the bread example from earlier, the Grain farm doesn't need to be in range of a warehouse if it's in range of the flour mill to send the grain to. Flour mill doesn't need to be in range of a warehouse if it's in range of the Bakery. Bakery needs to be in range of a warehouse as it's the final product in the chain and it needs to be stored. All that said, if you want any of these buildings massively far from eachother - they need to be in range of a warehouse. You can see ranges by clicking on the buildings and seeing the roads light up green. (I can't remember if resources are pulled by buildings or pushed by buildings or both. The buildings will complain if there's an issue though.)
  • Wheat, hops, peppers and potatoes are, IIRC, the early game island resource requirements for your pop. You also want a few clay pits for bricks. Nab a second island!
  • The stats page is your friend!
  • Enjoy! as you realise you forgot to put a fire station down and now everything is on fire

@kdd Also to add to what loftie posted, when you are planning production chains, make sure you check how long it take each building to make 1 unit. eg: lumberjack takes 30seconds to make 1 unit of wood, a sawmill takes 30seconds also. So you will need 1/1. Bricks for example, the clay pit takes 30seconds to make 1 unit, where the brick factory takes 1 minute. So you will need to have 1/2. This is about making things efficient

Thanks for this.

How does multiplayer work? Is it a case of joining a lobby, creating a game and having 4 players start from scratch? What about the time frame, does the game pause if the host goes to bed or does it carry on and players can drop in and out as they please?
