Yep

If you have, turn them (POWER SW) around (upside down in essence) and put them back in, reason being that they have negative and positive terminals, and if they don't match what is on the board it won't work, so try and turn it upside down and see where that gets you

Turning the power switch cable does nothing, it is only a monetary shorting of the pins that causes the PSU to power up.

Booting up fine, yeah. My resolution is all messed up, but I assume that's just because I haven't installed the drivers for the GPU yet.

For future reference is there any way to deactivate the GPU and run off the i5 without physically unplugging it?

It needs to be unplugged and removed.

Otherwise you will probably get an error message saying plug the cables in.

Could I just take the power cable out or would I need to remove it from the motherboard as well?

I think you will have to take it out, cards I've used before when mistakenly leaving power cables out greet you sometimes with an error message on screen saying to plug the power cables in and they dont boot any further.

Remove from the motherboard as well I think, as it will still detect the card is there

Lastly I've got to do a bit of cable maintenance. Is it an issue if some of my cables run under the right side of the GPU in close proximity (almost touching)?

As long as they aren't touching any spinning fans its ok.

I'm quite happy with my GTX 770 but I can't help feeling that perhaps I should have gone for a GTX 970 instead. Is there a huge difference between the G1 Gaming and Windforce (Gigabyte) cards as there is only a £10 difference?
