Do you know if OcUK are getting them tomorrow as it suggests?

If there is a choice between an i7 4790k with a 970m or a i7 4720HQ with a 980m which would people choose. The cost are both around the £1600 mark. I am still wary about the desktop chip in a laptop and it sounding (and feeling!) like a jet engine when on full speed.

Most annoying thing about getting a new computer is the cost just keeps rising as you just want that little bit extra!

Thanks for advice

Hi Voicon,

The total vRAM is 6GB,,, ie 2 x 3GB

I have to say something here because this is very misleading.

Currently, you will only be able to use 3GB of VRAM. Programs may register that there is 6GB and tell you it is using it *cough* GTA V *cough* but this is not the case. Only with Win 10 and DX 12 will this become possible. This may be around the corner, so to speak but I feel it needs to be said because the laptop will most likely have Win 8.1 on it. Of course, you can upgrade to Win 10 for free, though I am not 100% sure if this is just for a year from the last reading I did a few weeks back.

Honestly, you cannot overlook G-Sync and the value that has with it. I'd also say SLI still has issues, though again, with DX 12, this may become less problematic.

So there will be no or very little difference when playing at 4k between 3Gb and 8Gb of VRAM?

If the choice is between 8GB 980m or 3GB 970m SLI then it doesn't make much odds at 4K - the 980 might have the VRAM but your going to have to sacrifice some settings due to the core performance with a single card, the 970s might have the core performance but you'll be riding the edge of 3GB and probably having to sacrifice some settings to stay within the VRAM limit.

Both setups will very comfortably handle 1440p gaming.

@Dieldrin - wouldn't bother with a desktop chip unless you have specific compute needs or running an SLI setup - current laptop CPUs have adequate performance for gaming on any single mobile GPU.

Thanks for the advice, I think I have the perfect laptop for me in mind now but I am not telling until it is ordered, then no-one can come along and say what about this! :D

Hi Voicon,

Unfortunately stock has been delayed, pushed back a couple of weeks. Hopefully here first week of July.

This was only apparent yesterday, so OcUK info needs updating.

All good things are worth waiting for, so hopefully you aren't in too much of a rush.

This machine is truly fantastic and received much attention and positive comments during the Computex event in Taiwan.

What we can say for sure is that OcUK will be first in UK to receive stock, and have taken quite a few pre-orders already,,,,

Sorry that the delivery date isn't accurate, will be amended today.

Thanks for your interest and we hope you can be patient an allow AORUS to tick all your boxes,,,, albeit a bit later than we had all hoped.

Regards,

Gigabyte UK NB Team

At medium/high settings. Even 1080 is a no go for ultra ;)

Someone offered me £1275 for my alienware on eBay last night but it was a scammer lol.

I hate ebay for that reason, when it comes to expensive items I won't use them.

I will sell mine through friends and family contacts :)

Have you decided on your purchase yet?

No mate it all hinges on what I get for my A14. I could put the extra cash on my credit card but tbh I paid off 8k of debt off cards when I moved house last year and I like being debt free :)

Don't know what the condition is but if it's close enough to your asking price take it. :)

I have decided I am going to order the Aorus X5 just to get the free hoodie :)

Will place the order tomorrow and then patiently wait for a few weeks!

I'm after a 17" screen so that cuts my list down a bit. I've now got around £1700 to spend.

You have the options, now just buy the laptop... don't let the thread drag on overly long with weeks of agonizing, that's never a nice thing to read.

MSI GT72 or ASUS G751 are imo the best two 17" laptops out there, both with various strengths and weaknesses.

Yeah I know what you mean. I'm probably going to go with my original choice of GT72 with the 980m. I'll be upgrading again in 3 years max so that should keep me happy. It can be had for around £1400. I want to buy a new 360 pad and a few games so will spend under my budget to have a few pennies left over :) My auction for my A14 finishes tonight so will definitely make a decision before the weekend is over :)

That sounds like a good plan mate! My advice would be to buy one with the lowest spec HD available and then sell them and put a minimum of 512GB SSD in there, preferably 1TB, as you really will run out of space fast when installing games. It is a worthwhile investment and will add real satisfaction to your laptop.

Yeah sounds like a plan. Do you know if you can replace the DVD drive on the GT72 with a caddy to install another HDD? Never replaced a HDD on a laptop before but built many pc's so I guess it's straightforward :)

I think your right with the GT72 for the 17", that would be my choice after a lot of research.

Get it ordered so you stop looking, you will be really happy with it and the quicker you get it ordered the quicker you get it. :)
