You do realise which particular group of people are circulating the cartoons now, including fakes ones?

free speech? does anyone actually know the definition of that any more? you can san say someones act of terrorising another is a form of free speech, they have the freedom to do what they want so why stop them. there no longer seems to be a limit people have lost the notion of respect. what about 'ones duty to be civil' ??

Some background on the fake ones

A long but very excellent timeline and analysis

Read these (admittedly they are long) but they will give you a full background - the incitement aspect of this situation is more than just about free speech but regardless of current affiars - free speech is far more important than the concept of offence becasue it is only with free speech that we can have free thought.

My sig is about free speech and solidarity against those who have been held accountable innapropriately

innapropriately? if you offend someone do you then continue to ignore that fact? whatever it is, its not innocent and pretending it so does not make it right.

you remind me of the way the americans boast about "equality, liberty and freedom" yet their actions and history are riddled with negatives that go against this. theyre not perfect and neither is what youre trying to promote.

Am I the only one who sees a morbid smugness in this post?

are those sources reliable? theyre just blogs from the looks of it....
theres always 2 sides and i have no doubt there'll be those who would create lies to fuel the peoples anger. the original cartoon still exists, people are still profiting from making the t-shirts based on all this (posted earlier in this thread). there isnt a single party to blame for this but to say one is definitively incorrect and preventing your right of "free speech" i feel is wrong.

question for you: would you do something which you knew would offend someone knowingly? if you didnt then later found out it did, would you apologise?

That which cannot be questioned is inherently flawed. Free Speech is far more important than I think you realise, if we are not allowed to see criticism and satire - it doesn't help us to form a balanced opinion...

Also, this isnt about 'offence' - this is about threats. If we capitulate to threats, we are being obedient. Then it is no longer about Free Speech, it is about freedom itself...

An Englishman, an Irishman and the Prophet Mohammed walk into a pub and they notice the barmaid is an absolute stunner and she's dressed in the most revealing dress imaginable.

The Englishman says, "I'll buy the drinks all evening if either of you can get me her phone number".

The Irishman says, "No, I'll buy the drinks all evening and pay for a slap-up meal and pay for the cab home if either of you can get me a date with her."

The Prophet Mohammed shouts, "INFIDELS!" and cuts all their heads off with a scimitar.

sequence of events:
1. cartoons were drawn, fair enough theres your freedom of speech
2. objections were raised yet still went to print
3. they were taken as an offence
4. no apology was made
5. threats were made

heres your freedom analogy:
youre free to run about the streets naked. the BRITISH law does not deem act of freedom to express ones self as appropriate and they arrest you where youre then later fined/prosecuted and told/threatened not to do it again or face harsher penalties.... BUT you enjoy running about stark naked! so... the law is restricting your freedom. do you feel obedient to the law as they are holding you back? not allowing you to do what your want?

OR do you feel civilised enough not to carry such a blatant act in public because you know that others will be offended.

what im getting at is your "pure" form of freedom does not exist and it never will in this world. you do not live alone, you live in a society where your actions have consequences. all you do is show your arrogance by ignoring how others may feel around you.

Phantom read the links and learn a little background information (I thought everything was in the links, I may be wrong), your bullet list is far from accurate - we cant discuss it is you dont know what is actually happening...

why would He cut off their heads? it was never reported that he ever did or told anyone to do that...

not only that but do you not think this just fuels the race hate going on in here? especially so when you take a look at the line under your sig. you must be feeling really clever right now i guess... i feel sorry for you, what a closed world you must live in.

for your reference there are other religions that have/follow a single Book which was revealed to a single man. Moses/Judaism for one.

If it is true that the contingent of Danish Imams purposefully added to the cartoons in order to garner more support from their intended audience (as opposed to mistakenly / any other reason), it begs the question - cui bono?

What would they actually stand to gain?

That being said - why is the UK being pilloried and lambasted for cartoons from a different country, which even the normally sensationalist UK media has failed to reprint?

Even the US media has been reticent in reprinting them.

Read the book.

Islam is not a race.

There is nothing that closes your world as much as obedience.

In your fervour, did you pause to wonder whether his comment was aimed at more than one specific group?

Nor did he look up the quote, and determine who said it and in what context.

I used it to target a specific person in a thread about christianity. TBH its served its purpose, but the Noam Chomsky quote I like about free speech got censored ;)

BTW Islam has a number of sources for its traditions, not just the Quran.

If we do not believe in freedom of speech for those we despise we do not believe in it at all.

Bertrand Russell posts on this forum?

Cool. Another liberal flannel wearer to add to the ranks.
