Pretty much like me

I was reverse parking and i hit a car, i stalled when pulling out of a juntion yesterday and had to reverse back into the road, i scrape the curb by my house constantly, i forget to put the handbrake on, i tend to spend more time then i actually should sorting out my radio..

Im not a brilliant driver clearly, this is just a small amount o problems ive had when driving and ive been driving like 2-3 months?

My drivings improving, im beter then when i first took o the road by myself, i didnt even know how to disengage the steering lock with the key.. Im quite poor.

But people are commenting on how mu driving isnt as erratic no more and is much more calmer and most people aint bringing their wills with them any more.

Been driving a year and a half, nothing yet (knocks head). Won't drink and drive and won't speed in town or if I've got people in the car. Had a few near misses on the odd A+B road though. I'm bad for road rage in my head and if in an unfamiliar road layout being in the wrong lane.

id just got the mx5 about 2 years ago this weekend and it started to **** it down while i was stuck in traffic down town. anyway the big white transit in front started to reverse into my (new to me) car. I tooted but he gradually kept coming, I glanced in the rear view saw nothing shoved it into reverse and thud something had come up behind me. should have looked again.

Anyways after all that there was on damage to mine or the other guys car so we went our separate ways. And Id learnt a valuable lesson.

I don't think that I am a bad driver, but I have had my moments I guess.

I did a few silly things in my first 2 years or so of driving. You tend to get over the silly little things with experience though. Some people really are just plain awful drivers no doubt, but most people are ok though when it starts to become second nature.

I've been driving about 7 and a half years now, and I really cringe to think of some of the stupid things I did in my early days.

I guess it happens with most people, at first you take it really easy as you are very green indeed and I did take it easy. Then after a while you start to feel like you know what you are doing and can handle just about anything and that you know it all now, and the 'king of the road' period comes, probably about 3-4 months after passing my test I had this. I did some pretty stupid stuff when I think about it, fortunately I never had an accident and I no-one got hurt.

Now looking back, I realise how foolish I was at the time, and how lucky I was in many respects, although saying that, I always did have at least some sense, I did some stupid things but nothing that I would call absolutely mental and it's a miracle I am alive sort of things.

The only time I have ever damaged a vehicle was about 6 years ago, when I reversed into a barbed wire fence, although in my defence, I couldn't see the wire, I saw the posts alright, but I didn't realise there was a fence there. I was also very tired at the time so hadn't really got the presence of mind to wonder why there would be two posts with nothing between them in a 100m or so run of barbed wire fencing :p All that resulted was a small gouge and some scratches on my rear bumper and a small scratch around one of the rear lights.

Thinking about it, I am a much calmer and more patient driver these days than I was in my first few years. Which I guess is fortunate as the car I drive now is 3 times as powerful as my first car (a 1.4 litre Fiesta SI) and if I had, had either my current car or my last car back then (both well over 200bhp), I would have very probably gotten into trouble. It's funny really, I tend to drive more slowly now, not just relatively but in real terms.

You will find that many people do not want to drive at the speed limit. Only last week I had someone flashing me wanting to get past whilst I was driving at the 40 speed limit. You should never feel pressured into driving any faster if you are already at the speed limit, but you will have to learn not to get worked up by people behind you that think they own the road and are above the law.

Rgds

Oh they never manage to pressure me to going faster. Sometimes I get some impatient goon tailgating me, but it just makes me slow down. If I have to stop suddenly, I want to minimise the damage of him going into the back of me.

I'd be very suprised if anyone, truthfully, makes no mistakes every time they drive be it not indicating or cutting someone up.

If you want bad driving, go to the Isle of Wight. It's an experience.

I've cut a few people up when taking directions from friends who really don't know where they are going. "oh it's left here"

Thanks. Could've told me earlier :/

If you really want to see some 'interesting' driving, try Rome :p ...all I can say for sure is that I would never take my own car into that city.

I like to think that I am a good driver but from time to time I do make a silly mistake or two, I don't think i've ever done anything really dangerous and i've never caused anyone to brake sharply/swerve to avoid me.

I just bought a bargain Elise, but stacked it into the rear of my mates mx5 :p

Pretty good driver to be frank, but everyine has their errors every so often. As I have steeelies with hubscaps I have never properly learned how to reverse parallel park so to end up 2inches from the kerb. I just bang it in after a few tries, or miraculously it works first time to my utter amazement.

My overtaking could do with some improvement, but it could just be that the other driver seems to speed up a bit as my car seems to crawl by horribly slow sometimes. It's only a sunny SR, but for overtaking I always hang back then gather plenty of speed before going for it rather than just popping out 3ft from their bumper and flooring it.

Can't wait to buy a nice RW drive car like an M3 and get some advanced tuition.

Oh God, THIS! Having only been on the roads for a week, I DO NOT WANT to get points on my license for speeding.

What's worse is when I'm doing EXACTLY the speed limit on some road or other and a queue forms behind me. I have no idea how this works. Surely, they must all have been speeding in order to have caught up with me?

Anyone doing this needs to stop being such a danger to themselves and other road users.

A speed camera in a 30 will NOT go off at 31mph so provided you're not being stupid and intentionally going too fast you'll be fine - staring at your speedo is a huge risk, you all need to stop it, now.

Amen. When I went to Rome, even as a pedestrian, it was chaos. Every single car had at least some sort of dent or scrape in it, insane :D

Back on topic; I wouldn't like to rate my own driving. I like to think Im fairly good and know more than others (which is why I spend all my time on the motorway in the left hand lane undertaking and tutting at morons sitting in the middle for no reason and convincing myself that undertaking is less dangerous than what they are doing).

Every so often I make a silly mistake that reminds me that I am, in fact, not Mr Know-it-all. Like the other night a few weeks back when I came off a dual carriageway sliproad toward a roundabout and took the first exit, but somehow totally missed the massive 4x4 coming from the right. Pulled out right in front of him and he missed me by inches. I have idea how I didn't see him, especially given that I hate 4x4s and am always moaning about how they take up too much room and are always driven by the worst drivers :D

All very soon after I passed my test... nearly 6 years ago

1) Drove out of the test centre in Hastings after passing by the skin of my teeth. Turned into what I thought was a one way system... it wasn't, I was on the wrong side of the road and there was a transit coming the other way :D.

2) Tried to pull away on an extremely steep hill with the car not in gear. Rolled back into the Mondeo behind me and made a horrible mess of my Mondeo's rear bumper (but the Mk1 I hit was fine!).

3) Did the same again on my mum's driveway, reversed into her garage and ripped the door off.

4) Spun the same Mondeo at very high speed on a roundabout I already knew was very slippy. Missed some railings by a matter of centimetres and ended up down an embankment with apparently no damage to the car. I had to drive 200 metres down a pavement full of bemused looking dog walkers to get back to the road. Luck was definitely on my side there.

These were all within 6 months of passing my test. Not only was I a crap driver but I still thought I was god and drove way beyond my ability in a car that was far too fast for a 17 year old new driver.

Fortunately the rest of the world and I survived my first 6 months and now my driving is perfection... :p.
