Any official word on the GTX 970/980 coil whine?

After Gibbo gave the all clear below I applied for RMA for the 3rd time..

I got this emil back this morning...

I advise you to post in the CS section in the forum. I had problems with the people on the webnotes so posted there and found them to be much more helpful.

The answer is simple, when people complained about the reference 290's being loud i said the same thing, headphones cure all unwanted noise inside and outside the pc

I shall have words. ;)

I am purchasing manager and part of upper management, people will do as they are told. :)

Is the first line in regards to getting an official response or the RMA? I'm sure there's a lot of people like myself in limbo wanting to buy the card but don't want it with the coil whine issue :/

Wow that last reply is terrible CS, the guy who said that needs a good talking to. Not only that but there needs to be a level understanding and transparency about the issue. It's all good Gibbo saying he's the boss and this is how it is, but when the CS people at Ocuk have different views and have their own opinion, then what he says means nothing.

To answer the OP, Gibbo said this last night:

As an official statement to stop people quoting bits here and there this is our official policy on coil whine below:-

OcUK will accept an RMA for a card which has coil whine in extreme circumstances which we consider to be audible on a quality single rail PSU of gold rating or higher. Audible as in coil whine in normal usage and gaming which is audible above case fans in a closed case. Coil whine in benchmarks is not considered as a fault. It's not actually a fault in the hardware as such if a card whines, it is inherent in graphics card design, but we will class it as a fault for cards which are clearly audible in normal usage (gaming). For example two identical cars, one will consume upto 1l of oil every 1000 miles and the other one consume nothing, this is not considered a fault by the manufacturer and it is operating within specification.

Hmmm....still struggling with this.

Does it say anywhere on the card requirements that it needs a "quality single rail PSU of gold rating or higher" ?

Mine is 750 Bronze :/

This is going to end up in dB meter readings isn't it?

sounds like sorry you haven't got a gold rated psu its your psu thats doing it.

if i get one with whine its going back and is going to be refunded :) or someone will be eating the card :p

It is my job to help so I am just doing my job

You have helped me before ages ago and went above and beyond :), if it were not for you and some of the other forum staff i would not shop here. I once made a call into sales and spoke to a complete muppet almost like 2 different companys.

I might start a service of renting out my AX1500i and a DB meter. Is a "single rail titainium" PSU enough? :P

Although, I hear no whine from my 980s, at all, under any circumstances....

Gold rating has nothing to do with quality of PSU does it ? Purely how efficient it is

It us quite possible for a silver rated PSU being higher quality than a gold one

Ok, got 2x MSI 970s in SLI. Zero coil whine I am pleased to say. They are running off a Corsair AX860. Also these cards are insane, my PSU doesn't even kick its fan on. System can't be drawing anywhere near it's rated wattage :) yay for Maxwell.
