Any official word on the GTX 970/980 coil whine?

That pitch and volume is fine to my ears, But noise is different to everyone

That was one of the issues of me raising the RMA in the first place
Been like this since launch, thought it might of been my psu, so i bought a new one
A lot noise disappeared that was due to the fan on my evga 600b rattling (i now know) and things improved with my superflower psu..
I would expect buzzing if running heaven for however long, but to get it on borderlands 2 at 1080p, with things set to mid-high, physix low and vsync on and using my 22" bedroom tv it wouldnt make the same noise, but it does....
Got to the point cant play my pc at night now, because apparently the buzzing stops my wife from sleeping... Blah blah

I have no interest in benchmarking or overclocking, just want to play games :)
I can put up with fan noise but that buzzing, really grinds my gears (que all peter griffin youtube clips now haha)

If once ocuk get the 970 to them and test it and decline the RMA, god knows what ill do.. Ill have to sell my pc, because i can only play it in our bedroom (no room anywhere else in house) and if i cant play it at night, ill never be able to play it

a bit ott there mate, just sell on the MM or flebay and get amd card or another card from a diff gen :)

Please forgive me if I've missed something.

Surely just being unhappy with a card is a good enough reason for a return, certainly within the first 7 days (do OCUK still offer 14 days?). So wouldn't any coil whine etc be heard within the first few days of arrival and then simply return regardless of reason?

That aside. Also, why should he be trying to sell second hand? If the coil whine is that pronounced any one he sells to is not going to be happy surely.

Not since the new DSR rules came into effect mate.....you would lost money based on the condition of the card on return.

i.e. if opened etc

SOGA states that you can handle products-you can open it, handle it, inspect it-you can return it for a full refund(you have to pay return postage) if it goes back the way you got it-as long as you haven't used it.;)

Will see if i can record it later while on borderlands 2 (1080p, most settings mid-high, vsync on) and then upload it on here

I know exactly the noise you mean , My 780ti Sli setup buzzes away happily while playing Borderlands 2 and the pre-sequel.

Don't get me wrong , i'm not trying to say people should put up with the noise , but since my old HD6950 all my cards have made this noise in one way or another. My CF ref 290x's did it , in fact so badly it was like living under a pylon, My 780 Classies did it , my 780 Lightning did it , and my current ref 780ti's do it.

Do i think its inherrant in the design of modern Gpus ? yes i do , does it bother me ? well it did initially but now i'm just used to it really, i think as soon as i realised that nothing was actually wrong with the card it began to bother me less and less.

In contrast , a friends 780ti hof buzzes, my other friends 780 lightning buzzes , my dads HD6870 buzzes .

Oh and guess what , my ref 290p buzzes.

Yeah thats what I thought, surely legally your still entitled to a 'full refund' even if you've handled the goods.

Are these new DSR rules set out by OcUK a company policy or law? Because often companies implement policy's that don't strictly conform to law, which they entitled to do but should state that it doesn't effect your consumer rights.

It's a new law - "consumer contracts regulations"

Cant afford to and to be honest dont want to
Will lose money on the 970 after fees etc then there is the fact will have to sell it as possibly got coil whine/buzzing
So if this fails i will have to give up or put up with it

Darket: so you get a lot of buzzing? i.e. Constant or it dips and comes back?
Notice it more when in the menu/inventory on B2, but as the menu is used a lot then i notice it a lot
I should really try another game, might boot up batman or tomb raider and try those

If its mostly in menu's due to the high fps have u tryed setting a fps limit in something like EVGA precision, set it to like 100 or so . there probably a better program to do it with but i've never had to cap fps so dont know.

Lock your fps to -1/-2 fps under your refresh rate, that way B2 menu should stay under refresh rate and less strain on power.

I know you shouldn't have to, but if it's the difference between having a gaming PC or not then it might be best to look for the middle ground.

Might not work but you might as well give it a try.

I was going to get a 970 but coil whine put me off,I went with a stop gap solution ie Sapphire Dual X OC 280x for 125 quid until the R9 390s arrive and also Nvidia later models.

Nice upgrade from my current MSI 560Ti card.

Problem with coil whine is conflicting reports some say it's normal others say it's not, personally I never had a card with coil whine from either Nvidia or AMD based cards but that does not say a lot.

Hope you get it sorted.

I have it set to vsync on, and the fps set to 22-60 smoothed (not sure if thats correct)
Sorry for the noob question, but how do i set lock the fps? In afterburner etc
Dont mind locking fps because im not one of those that is interested in having mega fps, etc just want it to look half decent and not stutter

I get coil wine with my MSI GTX 970 but I think it may be because of my 5 year old Corsair HX 620W PSU. Since it had 5 years warranty and its over now should I replace it? Maybe that would stop all the coil wine?

We are not buying new GPU's just to have to cap fps due to coil whine =/.

Either way, my msi's have now developed a coil whine. When they first arrived i would only get some electrical noise through the speakers that varied pitch as fps went up or down.

now that i played some WoW there is definitely some whine from the cards as well, it can be heard over the case fans too. Playing tf2 though at similar fps makes no coil whine at all. I did not get any whine coming from my 690, and the PSU is a Silverstone 1000w gold.

YES!

I had "coil whine" when I had my GTX 770. I thought it was the GPU but turned out it was the Antex 750W. Changed it for the one in my sig and NO coil whine with my 770 or 970. I did some research on which PSU would solve the coil whine issue or prevent it.

So many people on here complaining about coil whine on their 970 and not said whether they have checked their PSU they just think as its a good brand like Antec or whatever its not the PSU.

Open Rivatuner(should have installed with AB-if you didn't it's in the AB install package), press the plus icon, add the games exe, then on the right you can set an FPS cap-try 1 or 2 fps under your refresh rate.
