Any official word on the GTX 970/980 coil whine?

Gold rating has nothing to do with quality of PSU does it ? Purely how efficient it is

It us quite possible for a silver rated PSU being higher quality than a gold one

This is true yes.

For example Superflower PSU's are typically far higher quality than other brands.

Example being AX1200i from Corsair struggling to power three 290X cards, whereas the 1200W Superflower Platinum powered 4 without issue. So two same wattage PSU's but the Superflower when 8 Pack was testing them smashed the Corsair too pieces. :)

Has 8Pack tried the AX1500i? I understand from reviews etc it's a big improvement over the 1200.

The 1500i is Corsair's best PSU for a very long time and is a PSU I'd buy if I needed something that powerful. Superflower absolutely own in all the other sizes below though and they are extremely well priced for what is pretty much the best PSU's on the market. :)

Starting to worry about mine, bought it at launch
Changed psu from a evga 600b to a superflower 550w golden green, but the buzzing is still there under load (in game on borderlands 2 - only game i play) and also doing it when i ran heaven last night
Do i have to deal with ocuk or msi if i were to rma it?

OcUK, sounds like you got a screamer, get it RMA'd. :)

Will do, think im just about in the 28 day period so just requested it
Cheers mate

Is there any of the 970s confirmed to not have coil whine?
If my rma is successful would rather pay an extra £50 if need be to stop this!

I'm wondering if it's one of those high pitched noises only 20 year olds can hear :P

I'm "only" 31 but my hearing is pretty crap due to far too many gromits as a kid. If I have coil whine, it's probably just torturing my cats/girlfriend, which I would find quite amusing.

trust me if you get bad coil whine - its VERY noticeable (and unacceptable)

I've been lucky with my Sapphire 290 (very very very near inaudible constant whine), Gigabyte 570,480 silent

but have had bad cards in the past

Im 33 , worked in a foundry for over 11 years but my hearing is pretty decent (used to have regular hearing tests) but im not getting the screaming, i am getting buzzing, like an electrical noise from my card

Both my last 2 cards, which are/were msi have both suffered from this now, but swapped my power supply each time as well, as a precaution
Think if the rma is approved (cant see why not - only that it only does it in game... But isnt that the point of these) and i am allowed ill give having a replacement msi a miss and pick a different 970

had 2 msi gtx 980 gamer, no coil whine. my 7990 had some but to be honest
you had to open the side off case to hear it, if you cannot hear it with case side on and your fans going i would live with it. no big deal, i bet most of your wives whine but you still keep them:D

A spade and the back garden can cure your second ailment.

I genuinely want to know what this sounds like. I might have to dig out some random crap PSU to see if I can get mine to make a noise.

I haven't noticed near as many complaints about the 980 though, maybe it's a 970 only issue, although I can't imagine why that would be.

Will see if i can record it later while on borderlands 2 (1080p, most settings mid-high, vsync on) and then upload it on here

Edit: here is a video of the noise

Thanks for trying, but it's hard to tell what's background noise, what's fan noise, and what's the 970.

Either that or I am deaf. :/

Bailey is definitely Jim'l Fix it but without the creepy back story :p

That made me LOL ;)

And as Gibbo has said with the ones with really bad whine we send them back to manufacturers / suppliers and hope they give us a replacement. Usuaully only in extreme circumstances they give us a replacement however which sucks a little.

If we cant get a replacement I B grade them and put them on the site

Bailey
