Any official word on the GTX 970/980 coil whine?

Depending on the PSU you're using, 980s can be prone to coil whine (at least in my case!) but that's not entirely the 980s fault

Not really...I think they have really used low quality capacitors and hopefully with all this bad publicity they will do something about it... they are not worth the money.

Mine was whining like a crazy cow with Seasonic 80+ Gold...

I would happily pay £30+ for better components!

You can add the Galax 970 EXOC to the list of 970's with coil whine. I have my computer in a cupboard 6 feet away from my desk and you can hear the GFX card whining away even with the door shut and FPS locked to 60FPS.

I take it back!

I decided to do an experiment. I have another computer with a Corsair CX430 PSU. I decided I would put that PSU into the computer that has the 970. I wasn't sure if it would have enough juice to run it or not but it was worth a try. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the PSU was good enough and the PC booted up.

I decided I would boot up Project CARS as this is where I was getting the bad coil whine even though I had VSYNC on. Low and behold coil whine reduced by 95%! It turns out my 650 watt corsair PSU was the culprit! You can still hear a little bit of coil whine coming from the 970 but only if you put your ear next to the open case.

So there you go folks. Check your PSU's! It also goes to show that you don't need a 1000 watt PSU to run a 970.

I am wondering whether or not to just keep the 430 watt PSU or upgrade to another 650.

Is that a fault with the PSU then or just bad luck?

My PSU (Corsair CX750M) never made a peep with my MSI 770 OC but as soon as my 970 is in, its squealing, buzzing and farting.

:/

So I tried to RMA mine and received the following reply -

“Dear XXXX

I am afraid that coil whine is not classed as a fault as it doesn’t effect the cards performance in any way, shape or form.

Apologies if this causes a problem.

Regards

James Bailey”

If you haven’t seen my vid it’s here again - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yNFwZDxHXM

Must admit after spending £500 on a graphics card you would want it to be perfect really!

Guess I’ll have to live with it.

Not being funny but on that vid once it's loaded in the sound seems to disappear right at the end? Menus/loading screens have always been the worst for it if you have it bad.

That being said when it was loud during the menu in that video it was extremely bad. If I was a member of staff I'd accept a return after watching that. It's pretty rare on the 980's compared to the 970's as well and you wouldn't expect it on an EVGA model.

Have you tried doing an overnight burn in on Heaven?

Don't be fobbed off, I RMA'd mine last week and got a full refund including shipping costs. I suggest you get in touch with Gibbo and seek his advice.

Cheers lads, hopefully Gibbo will spot this thread and see the video. I noticed it quite badly last night on Bioshock Infinite, constant all the way whilst playing the game. As you can see I have my tower on my desk as well so it's right near my head haha!

@Ayahuasca, as for an overnight burn it I haven't tried that yet. It's in my bedroom so there's no way I'll be able to sleep with the buzzing noise to be honest. I'll run it during the day when I'm at work and see if it sorts the issue.

That's pretty awful, it sounds like it's dying. My 7990 sounded the same but my PC is under my desk so it's not as bad.

You are entitled by the law to return anything you purchase online within 14 days... so if that is the case just return it and that is it.

I really don't understand why people still bother buying GTX 970 when all over the internet is said that they are defective, and I am saying that as Nvidia fan...

Check out this tread, OCuk has some modification to its cards due soon...

Looking in the coil whine thread it's only the MSI that seems heavily affected and even then there's more of them without coil whine, not forgetting they are the most sold 970 model too.

It's a 980 mate, and other than the noise it's insanely good. Was touching nearly 200fps on Bioshock last night, that's on Ultra settings.

Does it make a difference that I bought it from the store? I live in Stoke you see, so always just pop in.

Just to add that the Distance Selling Regulations (DSR) no longer exists and has been replaced by the Consumer Contract Regulations (CCR). The online shop can now deduct a fee from your refund, if they don't find any fault.

If you live close to the shop and you bought it in store, why not call in and ask them to test it on their open test rig?
