Any official word on the GTX 970/980 coil whine?

Yeah thats what I thought, surely legally your still entitled to a 'full refund' even if you've handled the goods.

Are these new DSR rules set out by OcUK a company policy or law? Because often companies implement policy's that don't strictly conform to law, which they entitled to do but should state that it doesn't effect your consumer rights.

By law.

And to hair-split, although you can open the goods and inspect them - which includes firing up a graphics card to make sure it's OK - if the retailer finds "no fault" after a return you can only claim back the cost of the goods minus the original postage. Still, what's a missing tenner or so if you really don't like the card.

YES!

I had "coil whine" when I had my GTX 770. I thought it was the GPU but turned out it was the Antex 750W. Changed it for the one in my sig and NO coil whine with my 770 or 970. I did some research on which PSU would solve the coil whine issue or prevent it.

So many people on here complaining about coil whine on their 970 and not said whether they have checked their PSU they just think as its a good brand like Antec or whatever its not the PSU.

Thanks for that, think I'll get an Corsair RM 850W GOLD for future proofing. Planning on getting an Haswell-E CPU and another GTX970 soon.

Pretty bold statement, his Corsair psu is actually a rebranded Seasonic S12 series unit with Corsairs name on it.

@elrasho,

Try using both of your pci-e cables for power to split the load on your psu before purchasing a new one

Is it worth listing brand of card against power supply to see if there's a pattern? Perhaps a list for combinations that do make a noise and those that don't?

No noise whatsoever here that I can hear in any of the games I play and I have a Galax 970 EX OC and a Superflower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" (I know what to listen for as the 280x in my Mrs's pc makes a racket.)

I think I already have it that way. I have one 6 pin coming from the PSU and then one 6 + 2 pin coming from another slot off the PSU (this is the cable that came with my MSI 970).

Is this what you mean?

Yes, use 2 cables to power.

I checked your psu and it states 2 x 6/8 pin pcie power cables, but it also stated that some only shipped with 2 x 6 pin pcie power cables(presuming launch units).

If you have the 2 x 6 ones then you are going to have to use the adapter, but I would still try out both 6 pins to test all the same(just don't oc it since it's running 2 x 6 instead of 1 x6 +1x8) and see if it stops.

OK could do but tbh I need it OC'ed to get the FPS I like in BF4. But I'll do it just for testing purposes. Just to make sure the MSI 970 will still work with just two 6 pin cables connected?

Note: I have mild whine at crazy framerates on an MSI 970. This was with a Corsair HX520. The same card in the same machine still has the same mild whine after I'd upgraded to an Corsair RM850.

Ah thanks for that, think I'll get a SuperFlower one instead but it's £20+ more

No need, really. The RM 850 is an excellent unit. The point I was trying to make was that the use of two quality power supplies didn't change the whine levels on an MSI 970. Fortunately for me, I have no whine from the card at framerates under ~250+ fps, so I'm not too concerned. :)

I see what you mean. I do notice the wine is a lot higher at loading screens or splash screens. For example in FIFA when you have to press Start to get into the main menu. Whilst playing BF4 it's not as high but still audible.

Yeah, mines quite strange.

I get very mild whine in Heaven, but only on the menu screen. When it's running, it's pretty much whine free.

But in games - even on the menu screens - the card is whine free.

Mind you, I haven't played the two games you mention, so maybe they hit extra high framerates that I've yet to see in the games I play.

You have helped me before ages ago and went above and beyond :), if it were not for you and some of the other forum staff i would not shop here. I once made a call into sales and spoke to a complete muppet almost like 2 different companys.

Yep Bailey done the same for me few weeks back with some Point of View Tablets, really is a top bloke and the reason why I continue to shop here and recommend anyone and everyone I know to.

:D
