Any official word on the GTX 970/980 coil whine?

RMA it... I had to RMA my MSI 970 three weeks ago for the same reason (with a different store) and I got my money back the same day they tested it!

Most 970s have issue, I have read forum in three different languages same story everywhere... hopefully next round of cards will sort out the issue...

Haha! Yes I know it, I grew up on the Rocket Pool.

Live on the Red Row estate by Morrisons now though, poshest end in Bilston :p

You wanted to be nearer the latifs really :)
Perhaps the coil whine poll should state where in the country the coil whine is at its worst and that ocuk are picking what areas are getting the noisy cards ;)

did you buy another 970/980?

Not even thinking about it... I read too many people having issue to be "just a bad card", I wanted to get a 980 but I saw people having problems with them too...

I am waiting and see if next waves of cards are better or I may just become best friend with the post office guy!

I'm gonna get flamed silly for this but as a Ex-printer/fax/photocopier engineer my onsite fix for people complaining about sitting next to a whiny printer/copier was to take a glue gun to all the chokes/capacitors on the relevant HV board..........got me a first time fix logged every time ;) just saying

Yeah, very true. Its a tough one, personly I've never had a component whine, I've had audible interferance on speaker amps ( turned right down but on ) ranging from french FM radio to almost a mirror image of CPU load going on, a PSU that sounded like Steven Hawkins being pushed down a multistory car park, but never once had a VGA card whine like some of these on youtube. A big part of me says HTFU, its how the components work & its all down to electromagnetic physics just put the side on the case, but at the same time if youve shelled out £3-500 I can understand how you dont want it "squealing in your ear".

I've used rubber bands to stop coil whine along with the glue gun trick.

These may be better for graphic cards given the constant high temps.

Band are less likely to invalidate the warrantee if your careful putting them on, you only need very slight tension.

If some does try band you could use a normal band to test before buying heat resistant ones.

I remember my old BBC B had some coil whine, though not very loud. :D

Yep, was going to order a 970 next week myself. Think I'll hang back till this issue is sorted. It's mainly my work pc and couldn't put up with any whine.

I wouldn't be happy with coil whine at all, I RMA'd my first 780 straight away because of it, I've spent a lot of money trying to get my PC to run at a comfortable audio pitch, all I hear while even running the likes of Heaven is just the sound of air running through my case, people spend a lot of time and energy on their systems with regards to reducing noise.

To go out and buy a product that is usually the most expensive component in their system and with many manufactures claiming to have very quiet (some even say near silent) custom designed fans and pitch that as a big selling point for the card, and then you are confronted with an audible buzz/whine which is louder than the custom fan they tout as being quiet?, and on top of that it's an annoying frequency, and they have the audacity to claim this is a normal function of the card, are they having a laugh?

People really need to step up, people that have large purchasing powers need to confront these manufactures and pass on the concerns of their consumers and retaliate to them that this issue is of growing concern in the consumer market place and that unless it is dealt with or at least minimised it could have a negative impact on sales and also future orders.

waited over two weeks for a pre order 980.... with no eta! so i cancelled that and went with an in stock 970 and that comes with coil whine...another week gone now! tut tut 9xxxx serious!

This situation is ridiculous these cards are an abortion... Indeed they are fast as my MSI was performing very well in that day I used it before returning for a full refund but components are very poor even MSI that claims "Military Class" yes probably North Koreta Military...

Well let's hope that future wave of cards are better...for the time being it is a no buy!
