Any religious people watch the Wonders of Life last night?

Strange that the OP seems to think religious people can't believe in a science based existance.
Not everyone who is religious believes every single word of a man written text, or interprets such words as facts rather than parables.

My girlfriend and I are Christian, I believe in evolution but she does not. I just think God kick started evolution which to me is more incredible then just a click of the fingers and here we all are... It's often the subject of debate/argument between us, annoyingly she has a masters in Biology and a PhD in Biochemistry which leaves me ill equipped to argue in evolutions favor!

My point is that if someone can have such an excellent grasp of Biology and scientific research as my girlfriend does and still not believe in evolution then maybe it's not so black and white.

even the church accept that evolution is true - so your girlfriend doesn't believe the vatican or the science!

The thing I've never understood is that you can see evolution actually happening. My cousin's are all religious and don't believe in evolution. One of them married a black guy and now they have two mixed-race children. It's literally right in front of them.

She just doesn't believe it. I think it's partly due to the lab she worked in during her PhD, her supervisor would always have the result he wanted first and made sure he found results that backed him up. Also from what she tells me the results are not as conclusive for evolution as the general public believe them to be.

you are kidding right?

When you say she doesn't believe in evolution what does that men? She doesn't believe that "god" isn't somehow involved, or that she doesn't believe in the mechanics or process of evolution?

Tbh, I know many people with PhDs. They generally focus on such a narrow subject area that unless she studied something directly related to evolution I doubt she know much more about that you. If she did study evolution or genetics you really have to question why she's taken such an interest something she disen't believe in.

As for the similarities between us and chimps and other animals, one has to consider just what dna is. It is an instruction manual, for the purpose of protein manufacture. We all need to process oxygen, we all need to break down foods, build cells, generate outer cells, inner organs.
There is massive overlap, there is no reason why the same pathway in dna wouldn't be used for each and every animal which is trying to achieve the same goal and purpose. Why build a different way of doing something when a useful and refined pathway already exists.
Whats truely amazing is that such a small change in dna expression can cause a species change, and how similar all anmals within a species are, given how different they can appear to be.

If science says we came from the same origin then doesn't it sort of give credence to the belief that Adam and Eve are the originators of all humans.

Religious people could argue that the major religions all believe that we are all descendants of the first two humans to be put on earth by God and science has finally provided proof of this.

If Adam and Eve gave birth to Chickens and Chimps then yeah :p.

I think you might be on to something.

Sorry, I ment, I think you might be on something.

Not really, the Adam & Eve story has more than a few holes. Like where did their sons wives come from for a start.

Well some recent suggestions, which I can't pin my finger on, but I think was reported on a BBC nature program suggested that most if not all of humankind which was north of subsarahan africa all potentially decended from one tribe, one mitochondrial eve, during a period of exodus and growth. Fits with some religious ideas of a single eve type person, don't prove or disprove any God event.

I found the ending to BSG quite cute when they suggested the child Hera was the Earth eve, and the influx of colonials accounted for the spread of mankind and its interbreeding with the then native populations. The 'spaceman' style event keading to human spread. Who knows, all of this has happened before and will happen again...

If this was the case why is there no mention of it in the religious text of any faith. Also why did religious leaders spend so much time resisting any notion of evolution, even to this day.

It seems to be little known that when Evolution was first put forward it was actually taken in quite readily by leaders in the Christian faith. In fact is was a Christian who first organized the publishing of the Origin of Species!

It was several decades after publication that Evolution fell deeply out of favor with Christians, although I think this is mostly in the USA. Not sure why this was though... But plenty of Christian leaders do believe in Evolution today! Of course there are also plenty who don't as well....

Genesis doesn't goes into technical detail as to how God created people, I don't believe Evolution directly contradicts what it teaches especially if you read it as an allegory. If 2000 years ago people had been trying to get their heads around genetic mutations leading to new adaptions and species through natural selection it would have been completely lost.

People sometime only see what they want. Parents of murderering rapists can insist that their children are good really.

I agree with that! But then it's something we are all probably guilty of.

From The Book of Jubilees: Cain settled down and married his sister Awan, who bore his first son, the first Enoch.

No, just no!

She doesn't believe in the Science behind it and thinks that the people in the Church who believe it are just getting taking along by popular culture... Don't worry it's nothing I've not said to her before!

She is very very lovely though so I find I'm able to overlook this issue! Hopefully she feels the same about me :)

I don't think I could put up with that, we'd be arguing all the time.
