Look at these gems of replies.

They bang on like Steam will kidnap their children and **** in their bed, I dont get the hatred.

Online activations have been a staple of PC gaming for how long now? Get with the programme you clowns.

Please post here - http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=19080 saying how good this is :)

No they don't. I've read them and they have a concise arguement, they play offline and don't want to use it.

They don't go on like you're saying at all.

I'd be more put off with the Solidshield DRM to be honest, and it seems bonkers to require both Steam + Solidshield. I wish Valve would ban third party DRM which ties games to hardware - it goes against the main advertised benefits of their service that your games are tied to an account, and not to your PC.

That said, at least the Solidshield system allows an offline activation, and regenerates activations monthly.

Steam wont even let me purchase any games due to my IP not matching my Credit/Debit cards location. I'm currently living in Mexico but still do most of my banking in the UK. This may not be a normal situation but it is also so very annoying when you wanted to legitly purchase games from them even after contacting their support several times.

One of their responses is below:

Hello Aaron, Thank you for contacting Steam Support. Our records indicate that your purchase was declined due to your current IP address differing from what is on file with your billing information. We have removed the lock on your account - you will now be able to purchase additional subscriptions. Additionally, please try your purchase again by launching Internet Explorer or Firefox and using this link: http://store.steampowered.com/?cc=uk Please let us know if you have any questions, or if you encounter any further difficulty.

They also keep telling me that because my banking details are in the UK that even while, when I load up steam I get the American pages & prices I'm not allowed to purchase at those prices even though I'm living in that territory.

So all in all I can no longer be bothered with Steam for purchasing games because quite frankly they don't want my custom.

Keeping your pc offline is a pretty archaic practice. They want to play new games, yet adhere to a habit that is contrary to what a large number of new games require. Can't have your cake and eat it.

get a local prepaid card?

or use paypal?

I will not use Paypal at all after having them lock access to my account before and several other issues with them. I could get a local bank account but I'm not of a fixed address and will only be here for 6-12 months before relocating again, so it is a pain to have to do this.

The point is their shouldn't be IP based restrictions in the first place.

Chose 'A' same as most people.

An option of 'Steam is the ONLY way I buy PC games' Would have been a good one

Well for me I just got a real gaming PC for the first time in my life (rest were okay but not proper gaming ones) and Steam came in handy. Steam has too many good deals for someone trying to get tons of great titles they've missed out on.

Have steam and love it.

It does the one thing many digital download platforms dont do, have sales. Not only that frickin sweet sales!

steams great, but it is a little evil as i sometimes fall for the offers that turn out to be games i don't like :(
other than that its awesome!!!

and its much better then GFWL

Use it, but don't really like it too much. I think there's a certain selling your soul to the devil "thing" going on with digital distribution. Just call me a Luddite. :p

I buy one or two old titles from Steam, but never a new release, mainly because they're stupidly overpriced, and it staggers me when people lap it up . I also like owning a physical copy, for me it's an integral part of the thrill of getting a new game. There's also the problem of flogging a game on at a later date, which Steam makes rather difficult, and of course impossible with digital downloaded titles. Sadly almost every title I currently own is now tied to on line account of some sort and that makes me sad.

I don't expect a lot of people to understand this perhaps outdated viewpoint, but I feel the same about Steam lovers and it compels me to post in Steam threads, even though I know I shouldn't. ;)

Like and dislike

Like having games in one place and its fairly well layed out

Little uneasy with one company having all that control, don't like not being able to sell a game, I previously didn't know you could disable auto updates but i have done now

My main issue is the fear of having to buy via online in the near future..... our Internet speed just makes online purchases impractical
