Yea, they said its university policy :(

Which is strange how I'm a games design student. I've tried pleading my case but no such luck.

You could try telling them that you need it so you can use the Source SDK, or try telling a lecturer that you want to have a play round with the Source SDK, but can't due to the Uni IT people blocking Steam.

Probably won't work, but worth a try if you have games on Steam, or are interested in Steamworks/Valve current/future games.

for me, sitting at home browsing the web with a huge list of games available to play within a click of a button is fantastic. A certain game may take my fancy and I might want to have a 10 min blast on that game.
If I had to go bring out the DVD and stick it in my machine as simple as a process as that may be I wouldn't actually bother 9 times out of 10. Also, sometimes I have a few games open and jump between them.
And I wouldn't own anywhere near the games that I do without Steam.

Steam is a working argument against ridiculous DRM. It's convenient, it's stable, it offers awesome sales and pioneers new developers and encourages exposure for them.

The new releases are over-priced, and better deals can be found for older games. Despite this not beign controlled by Steam, i can understand why people would be put off.

However.. Use Steam. Love Steam.

When it first started i was a bit sceptical about it. Since i joined it last year my views have changed and it's introduced me to many games i wouldn't even have given a second glance to.

Reason I ask is that the upcoming IL2 Cliffs of Dover is to use the steam platform and has caused a huge amount of negative feedback from many people saying that they will not purchase now it's running through steam, I was under the obviously mistaken impression that the majority of users were happy to use steam and am quite shocked at the level of vitriol levelled against it

Anyway, I'd be gratefull to hear your responses, thanks :)

Guessing it could be down to the game genre, flightsimmers probably like to do a lot of modding, and Steam might make that more difficult.

It's about time people stopped talking about buying games on Steam as that's not really a good description. It's more like a long term rental or licensing.

I agree with this. Which is why i would rather avoid steam if possible.

If steam allowed you to sell on products you bought then sure fine i'd jump on board. But they dont sell you the product they just sell you the permission to use it. Note however, they can remove that permission for X reason. e.g. say there was a problem with payment for one steam game...does your entire steam account get locked preventing you from playing any of your other 100+ steam games?

If so, to me thats a restriction on my rights and level of control as a consumer that i'm not really prepared to accept.....which is a shame as shogun 2 looks brilliant! :(

(multiplayer dropins playing other clans in battle in the sp game!!! wow!)

I used to really hate Steam and would avoid games because of it. I just didn't like the idea of Valve being able to just delete your account if they fancied.

But i've come round to the idea now, not having to bother with disks is great, and the sales they do are very good.

God help Valve if they do anything silly with my account though.

I hate Steam. I think it's because my landlord uses it and just steals all my bandwidth, it does my head in!! If he ever needs to reinstall Windows then there's a download fest for 2 weeks..

And I'm happy that if I lean slightly to my left from where I'm sitting I can a see a bookcase with all the games I've bought over the past 18 years or so...

Here's a thing. I had an urge. So I re - installed Oblivion the other day. No CD key to faff with. No DRM. No having to wait until the bloody internet connects to verify I'm not a criminal.

Can't tell you how nice that felt. Hell. I actually "OWN" this ? It is mine. I could actually sell it to someone if I wanted to.

So. I downloaded one patch that took 30 secs and off I went.

Yeah yeah. I know its a 5 year old game but I've never owned a rig to run it to the max . Until now. And boy oh boy . Am I loving what I'm seeing .

Mwah.

I only use Steam now for PC games. I only buy games from the sales but I have more than enough games to play so I don't need new releases. On the PS3 and the Xbox 360, I like having the boxed version of the game. I suppose I 'collect' them in a way. On the PC though I just see it as hassle these days. A few months ago my HDD died. All I had to do was download the Steam client and re-dowloand my games when I was at work etc. If I had 50 or so boxed PC games to re-install, I know it would have been a nightmare re-activating some games and trawling through my emails seeing if I could find usernames/passwords for games that I had to register etc. I can't see me buying a boxed PC game again, The last one was GTA 4 in December 2008. I now own that on Steam and on the PS3.

err. yeah . quite.

I dread to think how some people would've coped with "you do not have enough free conventional memory"?

I'm on about game activations. Proving over and over that own the game. It's always do-able but time consuming

:D just load up a batch file....or faff around with memory manager haha

Ultima vii was a system hog so it was!

They do take advantage with the prices. but then with Zctivision wanting 45 quid for Stacraft2 they are all at it.

I will skip games unless it really is something revolutionary or amazing. Doesn't happen often although I am really tempted by Starcraft2. hoping they see sense and reduce the price.

I could pirate it, have some of that Activision!!!!!
