Anyone just given up on looking for a new GPU?

The only downside to the consoles is the games are really expensive and don't really carry over when you buy the next generation. I've way too many games in my steam / epic / gog libraries to ever consider going back to consoles. I can even play my old ps2 stuff on my pc !

Plus I use my pc for other things that a console would never do, I can do engineering stuff with CAD.

I'm still stuck on a gtx1080 at the minute and would love a 3080, 3080ti or even a 3090 at msrp.

I sure as hell wouldn't be using it for mining.

Then get on the Telegram part alerts.

you can by joining alert channels for when FE drop, 3080ti and 3090 aint even that difficult to get they dont sell out instantly unless you have no access to use phone isnt that difficult

I've had discord since launch with not much luck. However I can't always be near my phone or pc due to work so when they have dropped during the day I've missed them.

mostly drop between 9am-12pm but recently also dropped evening, yeah if you cant access phone during that time its gonna be difficult , personally I found telegram better using app on phone and setting different ringtone to that so I knew its for that

Cheers, wow just over 63k subscribers ! No wonder its a crapshoot !

thats not all UK, contains EU as well ;) I've been following the drops for probably 1 year now and the 3080ti and 3090 have been easy to add into basket pretty much every time, I got myself the 3080 it took me the second time it dropped so didnt take long at all ;)

And when that 5 year old card fails or becomes too obsolete, their best upgrade path will be to a console.
Depends when it fails and the situation at that time. The point is a 5 year old card isn't currently obsolete (unless it was a naff card to begin with). My son's PC is running a 9 year old graphics card and it is doing generally OK.#

As for rest of hardware being 5 years old, that doesn't matter. A 5 year old PC, ignoring gfx card, is pretty adequate for gaming. Yes, you might only have 8GB RAM but RAM is so cheap these days, it's like £50 to upgrade to 16GB (or even 32GB to replace everything is under £100). Remember CPU evolution has massively slowed over the past decade, you're packing a 4c8t intel cpu and it's all gravy when it comes to powering these low end GPUs we are talking about. Peeps have literally never had it so good when it comes to longevity of core platform, it's not like the old days when 3-4 years in a CPU was creaking at the seams, no siree, these 2015 CPUs are eating games in their sleep never mind for breakfast.

Whilst i don't agree with the argument of "need £2k to buy PC equal to console performance" whatsoever, (more like £900/£1000), your point holds a lot of weight. The current gen of console will see no degradation of ability until games stop launching for it, so it's a guaranteed system (if it doesn't die) for 4yrs minimum being the nail of the head. The only issue i see with the next consoles is games eating up storage space too easily, i read a post about a year ago saying the new consoles don't utilise any files/reading from the disk, which is a bit underwhelming given information that could potentially be utilised under disk read speeds, say cutscenes or music.

From the PlayStation side of things, the last console that streamed from the optical drive was the PS3; PS4 onward basically install the contents from the disc and use them to confirm you have a license for the game every time you launch the game, then the drive spins down.

That isn't much of argument against consoles anymore. PC games are getting just as expensive as console and you can't sell on PC games once you have finished them to recoup some money. Buying new releases on console can be much cheaper if you are happy to sell the game afterwards.

You can play basically every last gen game (PS4 & Xbox One) on the new consoles so the games very much do carry over.

Console gaming is where it is at now. The new consoles are just better value in every regard. PC gaming is very poor value for money for the majority of gamers at the moment.

Up until this year I was a PC gamer who focused on bang for buck builds but now that is not a thing in the PC gaming space. So I now game on Xbox Series X and actually much prefer the overall experience. Money I would have spent on a GPU will be saved up to spend on either a PS5 or a Xbox Series X pro if one should ever release.

I don't really play a huge number of AAA titles really, so most of the games I play are under a tenner. Either new or in the sales.

I think the last big buys I had where psychonauts 2 and half life alyx and I still bought them discounted.

I have been playing a lot of the free stuff off the Epic store too.

Plenty cheap games on console too.

The only things I see the PC having an advantage over the consoles with are the ability to do non gaming activities / work, the ability to use a mouse and keyboard for nearly all games and for games like RTS that really require mouse and keyboard.

For most people a Chromebook would be sufficient to cover most non gaming activities / work. Mouse and Keyboard is also begining to be supported in more games on console too.

I think PC gaming will become more and more focused on ports from consoles and eSports, low system requirements type games going forwards.

I know what you mean, but I think the biggest change is people using their phones over the PC for basic day to day computer use.

The demise of PC gaming has been stated for the past 2 decades because consoles are much cheaper but there still seems to be demand there.

It could even go the way of the sound cards, they used to be an add-on card because all you got was the system speaker. Then on motherboard board designs got good enough to do away with them, except for all but the biggest audiophiles. If APU's carry on improving then the bottom of the market may get sucked up by them in the next 5 generations.

I've said it a few times Nvidia and AMD are tainting the well at the minute for short term profits. It could come to bite them, probably nvidia more than AMD.

Plus my GTX1080 has had a good innings too. I'd hope the new cards would stay relevant for even more years.

I agree with all you say.

There will be many other PC gamers with similar specced PC's like yours. They will have a choice to make when it comes time to upgrade. Console for cheap or a whole new system if they want to outperform the consoles for lots of money. In fact at around this time last year I was one of them. I had a GTX 1080, Ryzen 3600 gaming PC. I was lucky enough to get a RX6800 at £50 above MSRP. I only played two games on that card that could be described as next gen and those were Cyberpunk and Flight Simulator. When the prices of GPU's went crazy it was clear that was going to be the way things stayed for a long time so I sold off the 6800 and bought a Series X. Best descision I have made in gaming. In most ways, it provides a better gaming experience than my old gaming PC at about half the price. I am now a console convert and I won't be going back to PC gaming until you can buy a GPU that is faster than the fastest consoles GPU for cheaper than the console costs. I don't think that will likely ever happen.

Makes sense. It might happen if the bottom of the market falls out, if it ever does.

I upgraded to 12th gen Intel (12700k) and beefed up my PSU in readiness for a better GPU too.

I use my PC for more stuff really. I use professional CAD on it and I'm considering building an EV classic as a project, so the PC will come in handy (I'm a design engineer during the day). Just wish commercial 3D scanners where cheaper to buy / rent !
