Anyone just given up on looking for a new GPU?

Not just PNY... article today showing EVGA, Zotac, Asus and Colorful cards.

Supply chains to the consumer are complex, with regional distributors, vendors and who knows how many middle men. These could be sold on bulk at above market price by any point along the chain. We will probably never find out who is doing it.

To give people an idea of scale, the 300mw consumption in that article is equivalent to a large combined cycle gas / steam turbine. Like for example one of Connah's Quay Power Station units.

This crypto mining business is just nuts!

As an indication of s***show thats now happening, I just saw a 1650 (non super) s/h, going for £2000 thats right, £2000! I know the guy is chancing his arm but but still:eek:
What it gives is an indication of the way things are going I reckon, and if stocks of the lower end gear don't improve, you can kiss how it used to be goodbye for longer than people are hoping for. Unless summat drastic happens to the digital currency markets, and it all comes tumbling down (ooo we can all hope) I think this situation might even carry over to next year, 2022!

From what I have read on various mining boards, the miners are buying direct from wholesalers. Wholesalers will sell the cards on pallets or even quantities of 20+. This is why retailers like OCUK and hence gamers cannot get a decent amount of cards since they are competing with miners for large quantities of cards. If miners had to purchase cards like everyone else then we would have had far more supply at retail. Sadly the large miners are buying up huge quantities in China so they never get to us.

Yea I've had reports from friends in Asia suggesting China is buying everything they can get there hands on for mining purposes. Stock was available prior to Christmas even when the UK didn't have any, but now there is none over there either.

Once crypto crashes again they'll be back in stock.

Last time out, Bitcoin peaked in December 2017. GPU supply remained short and prices remained high well in to the following year. IIRC it was Q4 2018 before the market returned to "normal".

As of today, Bitcoin is still on the way up. Maybe we're at the peak. Maybe we're days/weeks/months from the peak. Nobody knows. But if Crypto has a similar effect on GPU prices and availability as it did in 2017/2018, it could easily be 2022 before things get back to normal.

Yep, grabbed my MSI 1080Ti from here in late 2018 for £620. Just a few months before they were listing at £1k-1.2k. Damn glad I grabbed it when I did. Will last me a few more years yet.

If this madness doesn't end by 2023, it's PS5 for me (already have a PS4 Pro and have been delighted with it.)

Pretty much given up, I occasionally check a site that shows stock levels for lots of cards online, but it's been the same since the 30 series launched, no stock for anything except a few 3090.

N cards will be much harder to get given the hash rate advantage over AMD cards. seeing these cards selling at MSRP will probably be a long shot.

Agreed! The 3090 doesn’t at all represent value for money in comparison to a 3080 although it does in relation to a 2080ti. I didn’t set out to get a 3090 and missed the boat with the queues for the 3000 series entirely. I decided to snag a 3090FE at msrp in November and I’m glad I did. The extra money was worth it for peace of mind in that I’ve been happily gaming since and no longer have to jump at Discord alerts.

This build as a whole comprised of numerous hard to source parts and it’s good to be able to draw a line under it for some time. Oddly enough, it was my wife who told me to just get the 3090 as I think she was getting sick of the stock checking as well. I don’t envy those still looking but if you are able to grab another drop of the FE cards then I believe it was worth it for me and I don’t have buyers remorse. Completely appreciate those unable to get past the value for money in relation to the 3080 though.

Yup plus check their trustpilot reviews, they basically hold on to your money by default of there are no stock (you are refunded stock credit) and you have to reach their non-existent customer service to request a refund. Even if you manage all that some people still have waited 1-2 weeks for a refund.

Good if you want your money tied up so when the real stock drops, you have no money to pay for it :).

I guess theres a chance that i may get my order cancelled but i have had it go from processing to confirmed so i am hopeful!

it came about 20 mins ago! It was on order confirmed until yesterday where it changed to dispatched.

Now to see if my brother is going to want it and if not it will going to someone who will use it and not for financial gain and just pay me what i paid.

I'm still using a second hand 290 on a waterblock. Was really excited about completely overhauling my build - new case, new GPU - but it's gotten to the point where I've just given up. Came close to buying used 1080tis or Vega 64s on auction a few times, but kept reminding myself how utterly daft that would be (if MSRPs were actually a thing). Occasionally check the 3D printer secto for a chance at a victory, but that's more of a "Hah, can you imagine how funny that would be?" type situation.

Its just a pretty impossible situation. At the moment, all these cards are paying for themselves in a matter of months with mining.

The reason they are out of stock everywhere, is because they are essentially free.

I'd love a 3060 TI FE but it's such a hassle trying to follow the stock alerts. I don't even think I'd be able to check out fast enough.
