anyone used to play on Wireplay ?

Played for 187/ra and a few others as r00t :)

Alright! It's <|187|> Helier / Yurka for TFC (add in [MoPs], LEET for internationals and a few others wh0ring.

[HH] for CS though after a while we disbanded, few of the others joined UKLA / UKCS (or was it UKCSA?) / SA i think, Iceman/Apoc and did well in those arenas.

Played Quake 3 on Wireplay, but then drifted over to Barrysworld and Gifford UK.

Once I discovered Gifford UK, I didn't really play anywhere else for a long time until I wen't over to play Threewave CTFS on Jolt and Savage servers.

Back when the online community was friendly and fun, with some healthy competition. None of this private servers and elitism you get these days.

Started with duke3d on wireplay before moving into quake2, and then onto barrysworld for quake2. Was in a few clans back then for quake 2, ending up in NME to win the jolt league.

But urgh, that 700 quid bill my mum received.......took it a lot better than she should have i think :|

I am glad i was around for that period of gaming though, i find it very disappointing these days now thats its a given that everyone can be online, you get all the bad attitudes and elitism and no sense of community.

I have been saying the same thing for years. The bad attitudes and elitism of modern online gaming is cancer.

My mum and dad made me pay my share of the t'interweb bill, along with my dad and brother. We had an itemised bill and I paid for what I had used. Fortunately we never ran a massive bill up because of it :p

I remember when the first cable players started arriving. You might get a single 50 pinger in a server full of people with 250-300. Still managed to outplay them though. Damn but my rocket prediction was good back then :p

We couldn't get cable in my area. The best I could do was ISDN and what a difference it made to my game.

Happy times :)

Does anyone else remember the big conc vs no conc debate that ended in a match between one of the WP clans and some anti-concers from the U.S.? Followed that on an irc bot before the days of live streams. Good times!

Yeah I used to play on the old TFC and Counter-Strike servers.I used to play on the barryworld servers too. I really miss the old days. Multiplayer online gaming felt like it was just breaking in - all very new and exciting!

Yeah it was a lot less mainstream and you felt like you were part of something new and exciting.

At time the time I would regularly top scoreboards on the servers I frequented. It gave me a sort of notoriety and a level of appreciation. These days I would just be lost in the masses. My reactions arent quite what they once were either I guess!

Some familiar looking names here! Greetings from [TPC]Fluke! :D

I used to work at Game in cheltenham in 98-00 while at uni and was chatting to a couple of office workers in on thier lunch break about this new half life mod called Team Fortress Classic. I said I'd played it at a lan at a mates house and that I'd just got my first modem (Pace 56k external- ). They said they played for a TFC clan called called [ARAC] and that if I emailed this guy called Skunk I could join thier clan. Oh, and I used to talk to [HB]Spam from time to time in Game too.
I dont think I ever did email Skunk the end but those guys got me into Wireplay where I played for [FM] and then [TPC] and sometimes merc for EF, MM, DA (I think) and a couple of others. Dr Octagon (Docca) used to merc for us from time to time and would say he would have words with his [DW] buddies and would get me in the clan, as apparently I was good enough :D I never did play for DW in the end (or even had a trial) but thanks Docca for the ego massage!

Wireplay brings back memories! I used to play TFC clan [DA]

I couple of friends of mine (god knows who now) knew you iirc and apparently you were drinking in The 2 Pigs in cheltenham when I was there getting drunk(er) once but I think I was too shy to say Hi, or I did say hi and we were both really akward so went our separate ways rather quickly. My mind is hazy but either occurance was pretty :o

Ricey from TPC still keeps the TPC website online if anyone is interested - you can see match results and everything!

I think I remember that or might have been the irc bot after the mass debate over the bunnyhop thing and Rainbow (the founder of bunnyhopping in tfc imo) and co whooped the US outrunning thier scouts as fattys iirc.

Had this pic for some time.

Look at those pings! :D

Played from about 99-04 in various clans, mainly UKTFCL for FLC, in. and [BC]/=BC=, but I spent time in roughly 40+ clans. Think I played a little in Wireplay league for -EF- but that would have been the early days for me!
Great memories, still chat with a few people from those days online, I was even more of a n0b then than I am now. Somehow?

I fondly remember the dead scout bug where if someone picked up your dropped bag underwater whilst you were playing scout you could then proceed to slide along the floor as a corpse and annoy people!

Some of those names look familiar from that screenshot. I'm now trying to remember people and clans that I used to frequently see/play against. It feels such a long time ago now when I look back, but I can remember certain public games and clan matches like they were yesterday. The details get a bit blurry, but I can remember scenarios and things like that.

The other thing which was nice, especially in the early CS days, was people were far more open and chatty and there to have fun. Yeah there were times when it used to get a bit serious but after 2001 when the eSport side of things started to grow, it felt like too many people were trying to go 'pro' and the atmosphere didn't feel quite the same again. Having said all that, I did continue to play CS regularly right up to 2005/6, and then after that I just lost interest. I still play the odd game, but I just don't have the same enjoyment with the game anymore.

As far as fun recent mp experiences go, I would say the most fun I've had has been in TF2 and L4D1&2, but I haven't played either of these for over a year.

Holy thread revival!

Yes as a matter of fact I was on Wireplay... [Rv]Hades.

Rv = Revenge

I started playing in 1997 on dial-up Wireplay, mostly Quake 2 CTF in public games along with a very good friend Melkior. After a while we joined Rv playing games on Wireplay and also Barrysworld and Savage occasionally (we were mostly WP though). Rv later merged with another clan and we became RG (Revenge of Gaia) as we moved onto Quake 3 Classic CTF. We played TDM a lot too but I never got into RA3 which many of the others did.

Some names I recall from Rv:

Melkior
Vorv
Atomic Jam
CJM
Q50
Sid
Sabotaj

Hmmm... more names will come to me shortly. I remember when I joined Rv everyone else was amazing with the railgun and I couldn't hit anything. So I used to spend hours offline playing a mod with only railgun and then public games again with only railgun until I got the hang of it. As base defence on one clan match (Q3 CCTF I think - Spider Crossings?) I finally got something like over 90% accuracy with it. I nearly wet myself with excitement and nerves at the end of that game.

EDIT: Played in [OG] too (Original Gangsters) which was a merge of Rv and others again. And a special mention to [PR] Phoenix Rising who I think was the first clan I played against while in Rv.

Haha I remember this! I seem to remember us both being awkward, a few of us were out because [DA] b0nes was down for the weekend and he knew one of my uni friends. I used to work in Cheltenham Game too so small world! Seems like a lifetime ago now, good times:)

Do you ever remember a guy called K.I.A. playing for 187? I remember he used to frequently play on one of the servers I used to go on and remember thinking he was so good.

Also, does anyone remember the meatyballs servers? They were always a laugh. That place had a good community too.
