anyone used to play on Wireplay ?

Holy thread revival!

Yes as a matter of fact I was on Wireplay... [Rv]Hades.

Rv = Revenge

I started playing in 1997 on dial-up Wireplay, mostly Quake 2 CTF in public games along with a very good friend Melkior. After a while we joined Rv playing games on Wireplay and also Barrysworld and Savage occasionally (we were mostly WP though). Rv later merged with another clan and we became RG (Revenge of Gaia) as we moved onto Quake 3 Classic CTF. We played TDM a lot too but I never got into RA3 which many of the others did.

Some names I recall from Rv:

Melkior
Vorv
Atomic Jam
CJM
Q50
Sid
Sabotaj

Hmmm... more names will come to me shortly. I remember when I joined Rv everyone else was amazing with the railgun and I couldn't hit anything. So I used to spend hours offline playing a mod with only railgun and then public games again with only railgun until I got the hang of it. As base defence on one clan match (Q3 CCTF I think - Spider Crossings?) I finally got something like over 90% accuracy with it. I nearly wet myself with excitement and nerves at the end of that game.

EDIT: Played in [OG] too (Original Gangsters) which was a merge of Rv and others again. And a special mention to [PR] Phoenix Rising who I think was the first clan I played against while in Rv.

I was in [Z] who were kinda affiliated with Rv if I remember correctly. I knew Vorv fairly well as we were always on the 1v1 servers. As was Sabotaj. Then I moved to Q3A and started the VS clan when it was still the Q3A Test....then later on joined [SeX]. Happy days. I think myself and Vorv were the last "regulars" to be stuck on 56k!

The best Wireplay 1v1 player at the time (IMO) was Patriot. Hardly anybody could touch him. He would beat me like 20-0 every time. Although Sabotaj was a handful as well :D

Ah yes I remember you and Z :)

Indeed, Patriot was a bit handy! As were most of [Hood]. A number of the better Rv players (not me - I was one of their poorest) went on to join 4Kings. Q50 (Quake50 - I don't think he was Rv but was in RG or OG with some of us) was pretty handy in the 1v1 too and went on to win a few competitions. At an I-series I remember being shocked just how poor his mouse and keyboard were. They were literally £5 jobbies and he was annihilating people left right and centre. It goes to show that the expensive gaming mice and keyboards really give you only a very marginal advantage , if at all. It's familiarity with them that really counts over how good the kit is.

Just remembering all this takes me right back to some wonderful, happy memories.

Another Wireplay old-timer here. Started playing Quake2 on there in early '98. I played for [KnD], [Z] and [ACE]. Brilliant community. I was also on pay-as-you-play to start with - my phone bills were between 500-600 per quarter! I was on 56k back then, but with their direct dialup on v90 I could get pings of 100-120 :) Ahh, them were the days...

I must know you I was in KND and ACE went by the name of Hole.

Just noticed this thread is about 8 years old!

Wireplay was awesome, great community back then.

Lived for tfc and cs.

In tfc played for DW, iD, BA, some Swedish team tmcS then ~A~/ak47

In CS I ran BmE (merced for kk/ecsf a fair few times) then joined a euro clan CSA.

Quite a few familer names in that as.

DW and BA ring bells, remember playing against them in [BLITZ].

<- Sabotaj

Vorv went around 2001ish? Same time I went as we lived in same town and was mates.

I do miss the old Wireplay days! 2.5p a minute on dialup? And telling myself I'll only play for ~30minutes, only then 4 hours to pass lol. Those £600 quarterly phone bills were eye watering, Wish I'd framed one :D

Some familiar looking names here! Greetings from [TPC]Fluke! :D

I used to work at Game in cheltenham in 98-00 while at uni and was chatting to a couple of office workers in on thier lunch break about this new half life mod called Team Fortress Classic. I said I'd played it at a lan at a mates house and that I'd just got my first modem (Pace 56k external- ). They said they played for a TFC clan called called [ARAC] and that if I emailed this guy called Skunk I could join thier clan. Oh, and I used to talk to [HB]Spam from time to time in Game too.
I dont think I ever did email Skunk the end but those guys got me into Wireplay where I played for [FM] and then [TPC] and sometimes merc for EF, MM, DA (I think) and a couple of others. Dr Octagon (Docca) used to merc for us from time to time and would say he would have words with his [DW] buddies and would get me in the clan, as apparently I was good enough :D I never did play for DW in the end (or even had a trial) but thanks Docca for the ego massage!

I couple of friends of mine (god knows who now) knew you iirc and apparently you were drinking in The 2 Pigs in cheltenham when I was there getting drunk(er) once but I think I was too shy to say Hi, or I did say hi and we were both really akward so went our separate ways rather quickly. My mind is hazy but either occurance was pretty :o

Ricey from TPC still keeps the TPC website online if anyone is interested - you can see match results and everything!

Good days, great forum bantz and flamez and great people.
Apart from AphexTwin, he was a ****

Did you ever play Quake 3 DM FFA? I guess it would be around 2000/2001 time. Used to play against a guy called Fluke, seem to remember he was pretty good :)

Yup, I remember you. You were called wnb in KND, right?

I was probably called Rampage when I started in KND. Think I changed it soon after. Was still playing with joystick in those early days of Q2

Hi m8 :D I thought you might have been on OCUK so tried to bait you in :)

I haven't played Q2 since 2001, but I still know every pixel of The Edge in my mind, and still have the muscle memory in-bedded for all the crate jumps. I can literally feel my hands doing it as I type  It's scary to think how many hours I spent on that map.

I remember the moment when I knew I was probably spending too much time on there. I got up to stretch my legs between games, looked out the window, and out the corner of my eye saw next door's hose in their garden. It was the exact color of the default railgun trail AND it was coiled up into that spiral shape. I actually flinched and kinda jumped  "Wow, that can't be good" I thought. Then went straight back to playing again :p

Had this pic for some time.

Look at those pings! :D

a lot of those names are quite familiar, lol every other person was called blade in some variation, not that my alias was much better back then, mainly darkstar (cringe) darkstarx (why o why) then just stuck with dsx (or dsxy for games that require 4 letters) over the years

Yes, used to play a LOT of Quake II on wireplay - under the name 'Errol'.

Was pretty good on the wireplay servers at the time. I always loved Quake II and the railgun.

Yep - online gaming will never be the same! I played a lot of TFC and CS.
