Anyone with a broken greaphcs card? Try this.

Turns out I'd chucked my 3870, but I have an old x1900. Not that fussed on fixing that one up so I've bought a faulty 4870 off of ebay to have a play with instead. If it works then great, if not I can see the aftermarket cooler that comes with it :)

Brought an old 8800GT with no output to the screen and tried this, did it a little too long and it was extremely hot. Now it works without an issue!

Going to try a 9800GT next thats artifacting and see if that will revive!

Stuck my 4870 in the oven at lunch, 200 degrees for between 10-12 minutes. I'm back at work now and it's cooling down. Will try it when I get home. Fingers crossed.

edit: I made note of that familiar solder smell :D

witch way do i put it in the oven

The guides seem to suggest upside down, but I tried this and some caps and chips fell off the 4870 I picked up. That said I forgot that my oven seems to be hotter than the dial indicates.

edit: For clarity, I'd already put it in the oven the other way up earlier that day but it didn't revive it. So I had nothing to lose really.

Time to do some soldering I think.

*edit* The silver balls are rolls of tin foil i used to keep it level not busted parts, Only the three things fell off! ( 1 power cap and 2 resistors )

Where did you bring it from?

10 minutes to the second, I then ask mother do we have a problem with the oven.

To that I got the reply "oh yeah the thermostat is broken"

So there you go people remember to ask if the oven is busted before you start this project!

D'oh!!

P.S Prior to this the car was BSOD'n within about 20 mins of any game even watercooled so it was officially fubar to begin with. I've now soldered the offending pieces back on and might try it tomorrow.

P.P.S On an old system that I dont mind breaking!

COMPLETELY OT (sorry) but talking of scary oven encounters - have (for 34 years) been a speed skater - when I got my first set of inline boots in 1993 I was told to heat the oven for 20 mins at 200 degrees - put the boots in until they just started SMOKING - soak some socks in cold water - put them on and then put your NEW boots on REALLY TIGHT until cool - LOL

It worked btw - moulded perfectly to my feet!

Praise to the oven indeed.

khushy
