Apollo / Reddit app, API shenanigans.

I hope there's another rise in 'forums' again. I remember from about 2004-2011 spending an unhealthy amount of time swapping between varying football, gaming and PC build forums.

Does everyone remember the BBC's 606 forums? I remember when they got killed off it created a huge amount of forums that started off the back of that.
Forums cost money unfortunately which is why the ones that still exist are backed by successful business like this one

My understanding was they were taking it for free, no? I thought that was why this is why this came about...?
musk had said they were paying .V .. do wonder how well chatgpt/openAI, and like, have covered themselves legally if it has been trained on copyrighted material,
and does not acknowledge sources -(similar to musicians/composers concerns, whose brains, themselves, inadvetently plagiarise their forefathers)

What I can't understand is why the **** did they let the idiot in charge (or a copy paste person) do the AMA and make everything worse....

Because spez is notorious for this sort of thing, I mean he was the mod of what was essentially a child porn subreddit called jailbait, so nobody is able to tell him what to do - he's made one blunder after another and is pretty much universally despised.

So whilst I do agree that Spez appears to be a complete idiot, this one definitely isn't on him.

Reddit used to let you add anyone as a moderator to a sub and that person being invited didn't need to accept - they were immediately a mod on that sub. That's obviously since changed but there were a few instances where admin / Reddit founders were being added to NSFW subs as moderators.

Reddit introduces API.

3rd party apps strip adverts out of Reddit.

Reddit loses revenue.

Reddit monetises API.

3rd party apps - surprised Pikachu face.

That's the TL: DR version. Reddit is a business, businesses need to make money to operate.

There's more to it than that. Have you seen how much they're trying to charge? They also gave people very short notice and have not listened to feedback.

"Hur dur, that's business"

Reddit has gone down entirely. LOL.

I like Reddit but you have to stick to your niche sub reddits. If you wade into the bigger ones most of the posts is just pure upvote bait and the top rated comments even worse in that regard. It's a good place to view content not really have a discussion though. I.E. it's a good place to watch puppy videos or memes on your hobby, probably not the best place to have an discussion about your hobby though.

Yeh, I've actually had to do some work today!

As someone who has never used a third party app for Reddit, what was I missing out on over the stock app?
Much better features.....also a lot that helped some disabled users, no ads, generally MUCH MUCH MUCH nicer to use wiether it be Appollo for Ios or Sync for Android...as well as many good others.
