Apollo / Reddit app, API shenanigans.

Much better features.....also a lot that helped some disabled users, no ads, generally MUCH MUCH MUCH nicer to use wiether it be Appollo for Ios or Sync for Android...as well as many good others.
Thanks! I tend to do most of my browsing on my laptop anyway so that's probably why I didn't notice the lack of features.

No harm in having a go with them of course....but things like being able to save images videos from it directly etc is good to share on you own cirlce in messaging etc.
I think overall for most its about how much better they work over all on mobile.

Yeh, I've actually had to do some work today!

As someone who has never used a third party app for Reddit, what was I missing out on over the stock app?

Apollo was just a nicer way to use reddit on iOS but I understand there were many great alternatives on Android.

As long as they don't kill RES and old.reddit I wont be too upset but I do support everyone doing the blackout, as much as I miss going to my usual subreddits (though the boxing one is still active)

I like Reddit but you have to stick to your niche sub reddits. If you wade into the bigger ones most of the posts is just pure upvote bait and the top rated comments even worse in that regard. It's a good place to view content not really have a discussion though. I.E. it's a good place to watch puppy videos or memes on your hobby, probably not the best place to have an discussion about your hobby though.

At least with reddit can filter out those upvote bait subs. Have found some very useful subreddits r/moviesuggestions r/legaladviceuk r/ukpersonalfinance I avoid all that meme and puppy video as much as possible though appreciate some people may enjoy!

I agree, my point is some people go to the front page and see trash and think that's the whole site when there is some decent sub reddits when you look for it.

is this actually true?

Last I heard the really big ones get paid by companies to “moderate” subreddits in such a way that it benefits the company.
Like most things there might be some outliers, I wouldn't be shocked if the nvidia reddit mods are paid for example, but the majority of them work for free as far as I'm aware.

In case anyone else is looking for an alternative, Lemmy is what Mastodon is to Twitter. Main instance is Lemmy.ml but there are other alternatives: https://join-lemmy.org/instances

Apparently it's easy to port Reddit clients over, a few developers have mentioned possibly porting it over (Sync for example).

I'm personally going to wait it out and see if Reddit changes their mind before jumping on.

I'm using this period to pull back from being addicted to browsing Reddit, if I'm picking up my phone for a little peruse that's the place I'm checking first.

Give it a good two weeks, regardless of API pricing policy change, I'll seriously reconsider ever going back. It's really nice to have that level of information about your own specific hobbies but you have to be lying to yourself if you think you can't survive without it.

Seems like the perfect opportunity to wean off the heroine that Reddit has become for a lot of us.

Lemmy.ml has been asking people not to sign up there lol as it can't handle the traffic, so can't see people migrating on mass at the moment. It's down for me at the moment too, but haven't been majorly impressed when I have viewed it recently.

I thought you'd like Reddit given that they allow Nazis etc to talk freely?

They don't really allow anyone right of centre to talk freely on there. Well, in any of the large, popular subs at least.

Not sure why you'd think I'd be a member of a site populated by Nazis though...

Yes all moderation if done, it is community led. The CEO, now a proven liar who cannot be trusted, even said he would be treating the communities as share holders because of how Reddit is reliant on them at 0 cost for their labour.

It is against terms of service to accept payment as a moderator. A number of people have been banned for doing so and accepting bribes from companies to influence subreddits.

Ok maybe not Nazis specifically but I've seen quite a lot of hatred and racism on there, and quite a few offensive posts, doesn't seem too much of a stretch to think that extreme ideologies talk freely.
I've seen a lot of really nasty horrible talking from the "progressive" subs as well, the issue isn't a left/right thing, it's just anonymous idiots online. I'd say on average it's swung too far one way and it's a detriment to the site.

Isn't that my point though? They allow fairly extreme ideas/comments therefore I'm surprised that herpderps on here would think Reddit is bad.

Yep, as a liberal lefty, I've seen it from both sides. I don't think this is specific to reddit though. Seems any social site is extremely polarised now, and anything resembling a moderate view is about as popular on social media as in the prison yard. You gotta pick your gang or you're on nobody's side

I only really go on there for the tech subreddits, places that are fairly small and focused around a niche, well moderated. Even generic tech places like /r/sysadmin are just memes about DNS, rants and people asking the same career advice questions again and again.
