**** Apple Event "Spring loaded" - 20th April 2021 @ 18:00 UK time ****

We're 6 months into a 2 year transition, not sure what you were expecting, multiple processor SKUs immediately? It's clear that in the first year, they're transitioning their lowest-end products and reusing parts and designs as much as possible.

Not immediately, but surely by now? The original M1 products were released half a year ago, bit odd waiting this long to just release more M1 products.. I think it might have just been me who was expecting to see a M1X imac then haha

AirTags are pretty neat, especially if you loose things a lot :D
They do. RRP seems a bit steep for one making the 4 pack better value but I can't think what I would use 4 for. Keys is the obvious one. I could attach one to my toddler I suppose...
Also, do they have to be kept as a set? It seems a silly question but this is Apple we're talking about. I could go halvers with my brother on the 4 pack :D

Wut? People don't care how it performs. It's an iMac, they're bought for how they look. As an aside, the M1 is insanely quick so it doesn't matter. Willy waving with specs is better left to 'Roiders and custom PC builders, not people who buy iMac's because 'pretty'.

If its just based on looks, this imac is pretty ugly? At least for me it is, the colours arent for me and then chin/bezel situation is poor. Surely you would rather a mac mini + very nice monitor if all you care about is looks

Then don't buy one. I don't understand why you're in this thread, you clearly don't like the product(s) so to me you just appear to be trolling and trying to get a rise out of people.

But surely if you're looking to buy an imac its disappointing seeing as its the same performance as a ipad? Idk though, guess its different for each user

It's more that the chip in the iPad is overkill for iPadOS. If they put a real OS on the iPad then the chip would make way more sense.

Nearly pushed the button on an iPad pro yesterday. Wait for new one or nab a bargain last gen?

Depends on what you'll use it for. The new one is a bit overkill for what it can do.

As mentioned above it depends on the usage. If it's merely a consumption device then even the Air represents very good value. I returned my 2018 Pro for the 2020 Air and don't regret it.

I think its inevitable that the ipad pro will end up running MacOS and probably take over their lower end macbooks (probably the macbook air)

Yeah its replacing a gen 3 which is really clunky now so might have a look at the Air, would that be better than current Pro 11?

I didnt say I dont like the product? I think the new ipad pro is great with a M1 and the new display and you could argue its so good at this point that it makes other products seem nowhere near as good. Its display alone according to apple is as good as their $6000 monitor lol. Its just the imac im disappointed by, and plenty of other people feel that way as well.

p.s stop trying to tell me what threads im allowed to reply in, and im certainly not trolling. Just have a discussion about the new products

Isn’t the old 2020 iPad Pro already faster than the 21.5 iMac (based on Geekbench scores)?

Fairly sure the M1 is a huge upgrade performance wise for that product.

In pure spec it's probably a little behind the current Pro but considerably cheaper. Much of the differences are subjective. The Pro has the 120hz Pro-motion display and FaceID whereas the Air has standard 60hz and TouchID. In my opinion the 60hz on iOS is perfectly fine and I don't miss the pro-motion from the Pro. On the iPad I also prefer TouchID over FaceID as it's much easier to unlock. Unlike your iPhone the iPad isn't always in front of your face. When it's resting on your lap or even using it flat on a desk the FaceID is pretty much useless.
The Air is also just a straight up newer device so may receive updates a little further into the future but I think the difference is negligible.

Let's be honest, the M1 is a huge upgrade over any of the Intel chips in use on Apple products, except for the higher end Xeon which are lol money anyway.

I would take a M1 over any intel garbage xeon product without question.

The only issue I have is that I wanted a proper desktop variant of the M1, instead of desktop, laptops and tablets all sharing the same one.

The iMac has always been a ‘laptop’ in a screen, the mini has always been a ‘laptop’ without a screen in that they both ran the laptop tuned processors.

You’ll not see ‘desktop’ class chips like intel/AMD have desktop chips because these ARM CPUs don’t need to be tuned down for power consumption like X86 chips do to fit in laptops.

The chip is the chip if that makes sense.

Hmm, no, not quite.

I ran a test, processing some media in Resolve on the Macs I had on hand - a 2016 iMac, a 2020 i7 iMac, and an M1 Mac Mini. The M1 Mini and the 2016 iMac were almost identical to each other, processing the media in the same time. The i7 2020 iMac was just a little under twice as fast.

Comparing the i7 to the M1 is kinda crazy, considering the price difference, so shouldn't really be done. But the idea that the M1 is better than all the Intel chips is wrong. It's marketing spin.

But why is that a problem? If the iPad can have an M1 chip, then great

Not a problem for the ipad, in fact its great. Its just kind of less reason to go for a macbook air when they are so similar at this point. I mean unless you specifically need apps on macOS, ipad pro seems a better shout in most ways

I think the main advantages of M1 will be seen in laptops and ultrabooks, simply because of the battery life. when you start comparing it to desktop processors where battery life and power consumption doesnt really matter, the benefits are less so.

Seems the M1X is just going to be their "pro" chip to be used on professional devices and not consumer ones (except the ipad pro)
