**** Apple Event "Spring loaded" - 20th April 2021 @ 18:00 UK time ****

Nice trolling, almost wanted to reply until I saw the username :D At least now lower-end macs don't perform worse than higher-end iPads, that was certainly the case for the last several years of Intel-based macs.

You cant deny thats its a disappointment that an imac, macbook pro and ipad pro all run off the exact same chip now. The only difference ipad pro and macbooks at the moment is that ipadOS is just a watered down version of MacOS. I was expecting much more when they said "family of processors." The base imac seems like a real disappointment, but then again it is the very base model.

I really do hope they have a MacBook pro (16") and imac pro in the works that have a better variant of the M1, an M1X for example thats being rumoured. Thats what im looking most forward to, an iMac pro that looks like the pro display XDR with M1X chip could be sensational. But it does seem odd that out of many products, it seems only the bigger macbook pro and the imac pro will get the M1X variant of the chip, vs the majority of their stuff just running off a regular M1

Of course there's bigger and better in the pipeline, but seeing how yesterday's presentation went I can 100% understand why they didn't reveal anything with a higher spec than an M1 (assuming such a product is even ready).

"Look guys here's our new iMac and new iPad, all with a SUPER NEW M1 CHIP inside! Oh yeah and here's the M1X that makes the M1 look like crap."

Yes, of course there will be.

Surface Pro used to have dual tablet/phone interface (as the commenter suggested Apple should do), but they ALSO dropped dual interface in the Surface products after they figured it out that it's not working. After that, they became a much better product. Now Surface Pro is just a touchscreen laptop with detachable keyboard, but not a dual interface device. And that's why it's a good product.

It still has a tablet mode interface…

Nothing to be disappointed at really, it’s not like they took a slow chip and put this into the iMac. It’s a great chip that the iPad now gets access to.

Just as a point of comparison, Microsoft's entire personal computing division (which includes Surface Pro, but also Surface laptops, Surface Go, etc) had a revenue of just $2 billion last quarter. If Surface Pro was as popular and successful as you guys were suggesting, it would have sold a little bit more than that.

Just as a point of reference, Apple's combined Mac and iPad revenue was about $17 billion last quarter. Dell's non-datacentre computers had a $14 billion revenue, etc...

Surface Pro might be a nice product, but it's not a market success. It didn't create a trend among other manufacturers, and it didn't bring revenues. It's not a product that people are buying in huge numbers.

The last time I checked the surface pro and well windows in general has a tablet optimised mode and a mouse/pad and keyboard optimised mode. Just checked the Surface Pro next to me and yup, it’s still there. No one is asking for a ‘phone interface’.

Sure, Surface doesn’t sell the volume of Dell etc. but are you seriously saying it’s not a successful product because it doesn’t match Dell’s sales across literally hundreds of SKUs covering price points from £200 to £5000?

The general user feedback on them is excellent.

We're 6 months into a 2 year transition, not sure what you were expecting, multiple processor SKUs immediately? It's clear that in the first year, they're transitioning their lowest-end products and reusing parts and designs as much as possible.

I said Surface Pro is a good product. There's a difference between a good and well-reviewed product, and a market success. Surface Pro is a good product, it hasn't been a market success because 1) it hasn't created a trend in the market, and 2) it doesn't sell significant numbers and doesn't produce revenues.

Some people (including the MR commenter cited previously) have been asking Apple to follow a trend that hasn't been successful in the market. Based on what? a product that probably can't even break $1 billion in quarterly revenue after 8 years of product refreshes? Original iPad in 2010 passed $2 billion per quarter revenue milestone within 9 months.

Don't misunderstand me, Surface Pro a good, well-reviewed product and people who buy them like them, and a Surface Pro like MacOS device might be cool, just not a device that has any market demand and I don't think Apple believes they can make that demand, Microsoft certainly hasn't been able to, despite very aggressively advertising it for years and years.

Don't forget that although yes it's the same chip across the board the chips in MacBook Pro's and new iMac should run faster on account of the active cooling - so not a total identical match.

Exactly. I think people are looking at this the wrong way round - rather than "it's disappointing the iMac has the same chip as an iPad', it should be "wow, they've managed to get the chip into an iPad!". Everyone was expecting an iPad upgrade BELOW the M1, so I'm not sure why people aren't happy!

I'll be buying an iPad (finally) when they release - I'm really excited.

Yep agreed. Being an iPad convert I’ve zero interest in the laptop space now and I can’t wait to see what the fuss with the M1 is about.

Yes, of course there will be.

Yes but weren't you expecting to see more chips over their lineup? If the macbook air had a M1, I would have thought that the imac would have a better version of that chip. And the ipad a slightly toned down M1. Instead we have the ipad pro, macbook pro, imac, mac mini and macbook air all running the same chip, despite their very varied use cases.

I think I just expected to see more variants of the chip across the board, instead of just 2. At least expected the imac to have an M1X seeing as its a full on desktop, but i guess they're just saving that for the imac pro at this point.

I am not in the market for a new iPhone but the purple one does look nice. Is this the first time that Apple have introduced a new colour to the range part way through the product cycle?
I'm pretty sure it isn't. IIRC they added Product Red during a cycle or two, possibly iPhone 8(?) but don't quote me on that.

iPhone 4 I think was the first of the iPhones. I got the white version and that was released after the launch. Could be wrong, however. :p

But surely if you're looking to buy an imac its disappointing seeing as its the same performance as a ipad? Idk though, guess its different for each user

I didn't think I wanted Airtags but Apple have done it agaion and I will probably order one of the four packs.

They have been known to drop a product red, but they include that colour at launch now for most devices.

AirTags are pretty neat, especially if you loose things a lot :D

They've added new colours a few times. I'm a bit annoyed as I have recently bought a 12 Mini for the mrs in blue and I'm fairly certain she would prefer the purple colour. It's sat here unopened but I got a killer deal on it so it'll have to make do.

Not this early, no. We're only a few months into a two year cycle.

Fair enough if thats the case, but I think I would have rather them hold back on some of their more performance based products then until a M1X variant was out for them. I just think its pretty crazy to have an ipad and imac run on the same processor, thats all. They're vastly different

Wut? People don't care how it performs. It's an iMac, they're bought for how they look. As an aside, the M1 is insanely quick so it doesn't matter. Willy waving with specs is better left to 'Roiders and custom PC builders, not people who buy iMac's because 'pretty'.
