The only other criticism I have is the Ethernet implementation. It’s unnecessarily complicated (read expensive) and just screams form over function which is Apple all over.

I know why they did it, because it didn’t fit within the confines of the chassis. But it is a solution to a problem that didn’t really need to exist. It also makes additional or replacement power bricks more costly than they need to be.

The majority of people will just use WiFI tbh.

Oh, no I totally get it which is why it makes their solution even more unnecessary.

Just think about all of the engineering time that went into designing that cable and power connector to also carry data reliably. Hundreds of not thousands of hours, all just to have a chassis that was a couple of mm thinner. But you know full well they would have been heavily criticised if it didn’t have one.

Seems like there will be two versions of the power bricks, with and without ethernet. Because the base config doesn't have ethernet in the power brick and others do. No 10G ethernet option wasn't good though, maybe that comes in the future like the M1 MM.

I have to say, I like the idea of turning the power brick into a thunderbolt hub and have a wide array of ports there, maybe there will be third party products for it, or maybe Apple will do it themselves.

At least they put the effort, the alternative was to just not do it and say "just buy a dongle".

I like the idea of a Power Brick hub. Would really help keep a clean desk.

This iMac doesn’t really have a 10gbe user need, it’s entry level.

The power brick hub is a nice idea and I like it but isn’t what they delivered. That said I expect people will closely examine how they are passing it though. If it’s over usb some people might try and develop some 3rd party solutions.

The point I was making is that the chassis could have been a fraction thicker and the port would have fitted on device and they wouldn’t have had to go to such lengths to add it. It was only done for vanity, which few would have even noticed.

The 12.9 iPad Pro now contains clearly better hardware than the two M1 MacBooks and with the right keyboard it could double as a laptop.

I wonder if Apple will therefore bring more MacOS to the iPad or keep the iPad line completely separate by improving the MacBooks whenever they’re ready to do so.

100%, the iPad Pro specs are overkill based upon current iPadOS and App capabilities. I would put good money now the reason for this is the convergence this year of some sort of hybrid macOS/iPadOS. The reason for the high price for a specced out iPad Pro is as they know it will cannibalise MacBook Sales.

The guy on Macrumours who posted this below is on the money

The iPad Pro and the Macs now have exactly the same internals for the most part with iPad Pro having better spec. Apple telling me that I should buy two extremely expensive devices with exactly the same internals because they've arbitrarily decided to limit what those devices can do is preposterous.

There's no reason at all that the iPad Pro couldn't become the holy grail that Microsoft has been chasing for decades: the everything computer. When you're using it as a tablet, it's an iOS device. Dock it and it becomes a macOS device. I'd buy that right now, this very second.

As it stands, Apple seems to believe that I should buy an M1 device to do iPad things and a basically identical M1 device to do non-iPad things, because, hey, that's more money for them and less convenience for me.

yeah there's going to be convergence of the different product lines, seemed inevitable a while ago. But I'm not sure why you would want to buy both a Pro level Ipad and a M1 equipped macbook at the same time? what's even the thinking with that statement?

I guess some people just want the "best" or "newest" in every line of apple products produced

I don't think Apple expects the same person to buy an M1 Macbook and an M1 iPad. You buy either one, but not both.

The All-in-One tablet/laptop products that switch between tablet/laptop interfaces have been a complete failure in the market, they never took off and nobody buys them. Not sure why Apple would pursue that. They've been very sceptical about these products ever since they first came about 7-8 years ago, and they've been proven right as these products went nowhere.

I think Surface Pro would like to have a word with you!

I was just about to say that. The surface Pro is extremely popular and a full Mac OS iPad Pro would be very interesting to me. Let’s see what WWDC brings.

Surface Pro is the only successful one right?

Not sure why you would buy anything else in the windows space. The SP is by far the best and it’s priced well.

Was really hoping to see an M1X or M2 capable device to see how it compares. Personally I think the 24" Imac is too small screened and costly for what it is IMO. You'd be better off buying a Mac Mini and choosing a larger screen if that's what you're after IMO.

The target market for these machines doesn't want the hassle of doing that, they just want a machine they can turn on and use with as little space taken up as possible.

Agreed, fewer cables and faff. Plus the screen on the iMac is going to be far, far better than anything you could get within budget once you've bought the M1 Mini.

It isn't too costly. Get a Mac mini, add a "stylish" decent quality 24inch 4.5K (or 4k even for that matter) screen or a better, add a basic set of speakers and add a good webcam. Then add a decent wireless mouse + keyboard. That $600 difference is good value. Not that I'm the target market anyway...

iMac has always been a great package, especially when comparing a like for like Mac mini setup.

I get people's frustration, the line up is limited at the moment so people are looking at the few machines that are available and trying to fit them into their use cases.

Personally, I really like the colours! Adds some fun to the mix that hasn't been there for a long time.

However, this chasing for the 'thinnest' device ever is, I think, stupid. Who ever sat down in front of a current iMac and thought to themselves "Good Lord, I would kill for this desktop to be a few mm thinner!". It's daft. Yet, by going the 'how thin can we make it?' route, they have had to add that chin. Sorry, KEEP the chin. The one thing people tend to ask for is less bezel, and Apple have basically ignored that, on all edges.

I was fully expecting Apple to put the internals in the base, a-la Surface Studio 2. They already have the MacMini - take that, stick a fancy screen on top and sell it. Done. Ports on the bottom where no-one cares if there are cables hanging, and all the depth you need for Ethernet, USB, 3.5mm, etc etc.

The only innovative thing in here is the M1 chip, and that was last year's innovation.

ipads and imacs have same performance now haha! I remember a few people in here were mocking me when I said that the macbooks were just glorified ipads, and now it definitely seems that way

Surface Pro used to have dual tablet/phone interface (as the commenter suggested Apple should do), but they ALSO dropped dual interface in the Surface products after they figured it out that it's not working. After that, they became a much better product. Now Surface Pro is just a touchscreen laptop with detachable keyboard, but not a dual interface device. And that's why it's a good product.

Just as a point of comparison, Microsoft's entire personal computing division (which includes Surface Pro, but also Surface laptops, Surface Go, etc) had a revenue of just $2 billion last quarter. If Surface Pro was as popular and successful as you guys were suggesting, it would have sold a little bit more than that.

Just as a point of reference, Apple's combined Mac and iPad revenue was about $17 billion last quarter. Dell's non-datacentre computers had a $14 billion revenue, etc...

Surface Pro might be a nice product, but it's not a market success. It didn't create a trend among other manufacturers, and it didn't bring revenues. It's not a product that people are buying in huge numbers.

Nice trolling, almost wanted to reply until I saw the username :D At least now lower-end macs don't perform worse than higher-end iPads, that was certainly the case for the last several years of Intel-based macs.
