I find this device pretty confusing. For who is this device meant to target?

Any professional thats after a device like this will surely get the surface 3 pro. You get all the access to professional software for the same price and its x86 based.

We've now gone full circle. Do you guys remember the first Tablet PCs some 10-13 years ago where you had no ports on it and you would flip the screen all the way to the underside to slate mode and then use stylus to navigate on it? And if you needed to use network or CD you would have to dock it. Then they moved on to screens that would turn around its own axis and then lie flat with the back to the keyboard? And we've gone through all combinations, tilting screens, revolving screens, detachable screens, just screens with optional keyboard and now back to screens with optional keyboard, phone OS and no expansion docks. Now the next step for September 2016 is to give it USB-C port and dock.

And despite all of those products being flops or niche weirdos, the manufacturers are still chasing that mythical user - i'm thinking a lady, in spectacles, business attire, white shirt, two buttons undone. She's standing in a glass panel meeting room, in front of small crowd of men. She's talking about something, we can't hear because she's behind that glass panel. She's drawing some doodles on white board with a marker. Some circles, arrows, we can't figure out what it is. The men in the meeting room lose interest, start browsing things on their phones, talk to each other, few of them are shaking their heads as a "no". BUT WAIT, she reaches for her leather laptop case and she pulls... it cannot be... it's a Pencept PenPad, Apple Newton, Dosch & Amand FreePad, HP Tablet PC, Compaq TC1000, Nokia Internet Tablet, no, it's iPad Pro, in a neat flip case. It's large, it's visible. She's starting some sort of interactive powerpoint like presentation quickly navigating the screen with a pen like device. The men in the room now look at her, she's like a teacher showing them their first illustrated biology book. What's on the screen. A pie chart, she flicks with a pen, a column graph, flick. It's a zigzag arrow line on vector background, it's leading upwards, it shows instant growth. She double taps the top. It zooms with swift and magnificent animation. Yes, they nod, YES! They understand now. It's a standing ovation!!!!!

"iPad Pro. For that one time when you had to explain erectile disfunction to a bunch of ******* hungarians."

And scene.

I don't think these will appeal to your average home user tho. Wont it be too big for surfing the net on the couch scenarios?

Not if you have big hands and don't mind losing some mobility. I've been using the original big one, Samsung's Note Pro 12.2 for 18 months now and my wife amongst others say it's too big for them and won't use it.

It's widescreen (295.6 x 203.9 x 8 mm (11.64 x 8.03 x 0.31 in) Weight 750 g (1.65 lb)

The Pro is 4:3 (305.7 x 220.6 x 6.9 mm (12.04 x 8.69 x 0.27 in)
Weight 713 g) so larger but lighter.

I love the thing as the screen is fantastic but it is on the limit for mobility and I'm a big bloke. It's not something you can use comfortably with one hand and does take up space when you travel.

Those that get one will love that screen but I would recommend that you try one before you buy as it really is a beast in size.

^^ that's some great advice. I use mine on the couch and in bed. For my usage, I think it'll be too big. But I'll deffo give it a try and see. Will possibly go android though, fancy a change with my phone too as will possibly go android to match.

Imagine a Surface Pro 3 with no kickstand, no dockability, limited ecosystem, no expandable storage/USB port, dubious palm rejection and $200+ more expensive and you basically have the iPad Pro - I think that covers it? :p

And despite all that, more iPad Pros will be sold in its first quarter than all the Surfaces sold to date.

looks nice, just too big for what I'm after and with this just being announced and on sale November its not looking likely there will be an Air 3 this year

Which is really annoying.
Our three iPad 4's are up for replacement this year; the Pro is potentially too big and I really don't want to pay full price for year old tech in the Air 2.

same problem I have but I'm coming from an Ipad 2 that's really starting to feel clunky - plus apps now are starting to state higher requirements than the Ipad 2.

What's new? We all know apple have great marketing. Doesn't actually mean the device is better in anyway.

And as people have said if they are trying to get professionals to use it then they missed a massive trick, since its going to be running apps not programs and still doesn't have a USB port!

Great I can edit 4k video on to what exactly???

As i said in the main event thread - I don't think the OS is a issue at all, the issue for me is that the professional applications and integration between them just isn't there at the moment. I mean sure Adobe showcased a few apps that do some neat stuff and work together but what if I want to quickly move something i've created into Word for example - thats when you run into issues.

I mean, if you could get Logic on the new iPad and have it do everything the desktop version could do, including interface with digital instruments via the lightning port and perform as well - then why wouldn't a music professional consider an iPad pro over a new macbook?

Agreed, but so far the Adobe products on iPads are just nowhere near the depth that is needed for the professional. Yes they are a bit of fun to play with but no one is going to give up their desktop and full versions of Photoshop et at. and work on one of those.

I think calling it the Plus and aiming it at those creative types that just want to play every now and then (or want a bigger tablet) would have been a better bet.

Why would you go for this over a Surface Pro (or a macbook and mouse/wacom tablet) with the current app selection? Most wouldn't.

It's got potential, but it's a few releases from Adobe from it's full potential.

EDIT: Oh and "Pencil"?! Why not just call it what it is, a pen, which has been the standard term for an active "stylus" for a decade or more.

I wouldn't worry about that. The Air 2 is still super fast and is still the fastest tablet out there for most tasks.

I don't get who the iPad Pro is for. Professionals won't buy it because it hasn't got any ports and you can't attach a mouse. Home users wont buy it because it's too big and too expensive. I can see maybe graphic designers or artists buying it but wouldn't the Surface Pro 3 be better for that as you can use proper apps like Photoshop?

Not feeling it at all.

If they had made it with Core-M in it and running OSX, now that's a tablet I would buy without even thinking about it.

I agree but the upgraded devices will need to last 3 years which means it'll be 4 years old at the end which will probably mean it'll be slow and frustrating to use.

I can't see it being that more powerful than the i5, but then you choose with the SP3 up to an i7.

Remember the SP3 chips are ULV not full power. I can see them being similar, just different architectures. Battery life will probably be similar as well due to the screen size.

Quite possibly. :(

... because it'll have great touch and stylus-optimised apps for it.

Like what?

Are there any apps out that even use layers for example? The current iPad apps by Adobe are pretty poor, more like viewing extensions of the desktop programs that you can do a quick edit on than standalone apps.

(Seriously interested to know if i'm missing something as I will probably update my (original) mini at some point soon and I want to do some basic photo editing when away rather than using my macbook).
