*** Apple Media Event - 20th Oct 2010 - Official Thread ***

Just specced up a 11"er. 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 128GB Flash Storage. £997.58 incl. VAT on the student store.

Sooo tempted to click buy...

Problem is that with a 15" MBP and an iPad & iPhone it's a bit hard to justify :(.

Hard to justify? How many laptop/portable devices do you need! :p
I have an iPad and contemplating selling it to buy an MBA but Im not totally convinced.
I already own an iPhone, wouldnt want to have an iPad AND an Macbook Air!

iLife 11 looks nice but all I use is iPhoto as I uses Final Cut to edit videos as iMovie is so nerfed it makes my brain hurt...

OS X 10.7 is still too early to make any proper informed decision but it is clear that Apple is trying to bring the reassurance and safety of the App Store and some of the multi-touch interface from iOS. WWDC should show us 10.7 in more detail. I'm not worried that Apple would make OS XI into iOS for the Mac as that would result in massive backlash. A Mac is not an iOS device...

MacBook Air is very nice and if only they had put a SIM tray in the damn thing. Still if I needed to replace my WhiteBook then I'd probably get an Air. Don't need the power or weight of a Pro.

Not the best Apple Event ever but to be honest how do you really follow the iPhone 4 and iPad announcements?

I have a feeling that WWDC next year is going to be a stunner.

SFW? NSFW?

It's a paste of the new Mac App Store rules. The  tells you all you need to know :p

If you look at the Mac App Store screenshots iPhoto on its own is $14.99 so you could just wait for it to open and buy it from there.

Hmmmmmmm not bad but the 13" macbook air still hasnt had a good processor bump, its gone the ultra ultra portable route, dont get me wrong its nice, but essentially hardly any different in form factor to my 13" unibody macbook, ok its (a little) thicker but iv got 6gb ram and 1.064TB HD/SSD with 2ghz in there, its a total power house and cost me about £550 alltogether. This doesnt make sense to anyone other than those needing to fit it in a brief case and only do business work for, i.e. office/net/emails, not bad at all, but still missing 'something'.

The 11" is pointless unless u need to use it on a plane or fly often IMO, the screens just to small to do anything major, but then my needs are 'highly portable' with 'power house' which a 13" unibody is the perfect comprimise.

You got a 13" MB with all that for £550?

Thing is, people *have* been calling for a 11" MBA for a *long* time, and it *will* sell well. So calling it pointless because you have to use for it is a little short sighted.

It hasn't got a processor bump because it's not going for all out power. It's going for battery life.

MBA 11" 1.4/1.6 = 10W
MBA 13" 1.86/2.13 = 17W
MB 13" 2.4 = 25W
MBP 13" 2.66 = 25W
MBP 15" 17" i5 2.4/2.53, i7 2.66/2.8 = 35W

The lowest i5/i7 wattage mobile processors are 18W, which *could* have gone into the MBA.

Also, this is assuming Apple is using standard parts, they could have got hold of even lower voltage chips from Intel (Better bins).

Personally for what market the MBA is catering for, the lack of a Core ix processor in there is the correct choice.

Want power? That's what the MBP range has.

The first well informed response I have seen on this forum of late :)

I remember when the iPad first announced, the WAVE of criticism was that:

1 - Why doesn't it have full OSX?
2 - Why isn't it Widescreen?
3 - Why doesn't it have an USB port?

Now you have all of those in the MBA 11", so I think Apple have listened, and they have delivered.

Exactly. It's an almost iPad sized device that runs full OS X, has USB and is widescreen.

People always bitch and moan and Apple tend to always sell a shed load regardless. :)

Well yeah see what your saying and agree, however what im pointing out is, the 11" is very small for doing much more than office/internet/email, i mean if you do it constantly like more than 15 times a day then go for it, otherwise the ipad would be a better choice, even more so if your just browsing the net. Of course it will sell well its a 'new' product apple havent released before, however when really thinking about it in terms of useability/cost etc the 13" just makes more sense, that screen res boost will make a huge difference, ever tried to do anything major on a netbook? it gets cramped awefully quickly, the higher res of the 11"air will help but only so much. Again great for those really honestly on the go, but given the 2 the 13" just makes so much more sense, its not going to make a difference persay if your going to throw it in a backpack anyways..........but then we come full circle back to powerhouse vs light use laptop, yeah mbp for power, or something like mine, i use mine for all the above plus photography processing, i need to print keyrings/prints etc in clubs on a weekly basis and batch convert pics, needs a lot of HD space etc, as i said my use means I go for the MB

Yeah 550 ish, got the MB 2nd hand for £400, added a SSD for 70 and 1tb for 70, bracket or 2, around £550, BARGAIN.

Ergo it doesnt need an i7 or a beast to complete the aforementioned tasks surely?

Spot on RL. Which is why I may end up selling my iPad to go for one of these.

The lack of a sim card slot is a bust for me, otherwise i'd like one too.

Because my main use for my iPad is commuting, and I can use it anywhere, even standing up on a queue. If I get the MBA, I won't use it any different than how I use my 2 months old MBP....so that would be a waste of money.

Plus, I have a 6 months old HP netbook that i should really get rid of.

Could you not use a MiFi? That would give "proper" portability to the MBA with regards to data...
