Apple VR

This obviously isn't a PC/console gaming oriented accessory, Apple was never going to produce a VR headset so that you can use it to game on your PC. It's a standalone Apple device aimed to complement their own ecosystem.

However, hopefully enough of the technology they develop will trickle to other brands so that gaming VR headsets can get a lot better in the coming years.

Sounds like the PPI on the screens is quite high, Apple calls it MicroOLED and without giving the actual PPI number they said its 64 times more than an iPhone display.

If I assume they mean a basic iPhone 13, then the ppi on that is 460, making the vision pro headset 30 thousand ppi

That's a huge upgrade over existing headsets

Quest 2: 730 ppi
Valve index: 600 ppi
PSVR2: 800 ppi
HP Reverb G2: 1050 ppi
Apple Vision Pro: 29440 ppi

Oh no. Turning one pixel into 64 (i.e. 8x8) means pixel density increases by a factor of 8, not 64. The ppi pixel density is measured in 1D rather than 2D (it's pixel per inch, not pixel per inch squared).

So this will have a pixel density of 3680 ppi, which was leaked before the event.

Still blows the competition away, but it's not 29k :D

You just look at whatever you want to click on, then pinch your fingers. Apparently they can be pretty much anywhere and it'll register.
You can even look at a search bar, or text field and start talking and it auto fills.

I can see these being useful in certain industries and tech environments, programming etc. But for the average joe it's just a expensive gimmick. And once again tech is encouraging people to be more isolated and less social.

A few more hands on have appeared online.

Display is very good, passthrough is very good and hand gestures are very good. Automatic IPD adjustment and room calibration.

There are some bad points though. The FOV is not as good as advertised. It has a scuba mask feeling. Also it's front heavy, feels heavier than the Quest 2.

The weight is offset by your wallet being $3500 lighter. :P

It does seem like an amazing headset. If this ever becomes available to use for PC VR (Unlikely) it would be the best SIM headset out there.

I'm really hoping this makes Meta improve their ball game on OS and software though, as the Quest Pro can do a lot of what the Reality Pro can do (though obviously at a lower visual quality) but is handicapped by its features like eye and face tracking and advanced haptics not being properly supported software side.

For me it’s not solving any problems, that make me want to buy it, not like an iPod or iPhone/smartphone.

I just don’t really understand what it’s for? £3500 to sit and look at photos or browse the internet with a different look…. It just doesn’t make sense to me for the price.

Is it me, or does vision pro seem underwhelming for the price and really nothing groundbreaking in the terms of VR?
I think what they are trying to do is remove the human interface from monitors, kyb & mouse and the Vision Pro is the minimum lvl for achieving that the v1.0 where as MQP tried and failed to do that.

So its for people that want that experience it not really a pitch towards VR gamers which is a shame but its good to see progress and competition.

I think for Apple's approach to really take off they need to bring PCVR into the fold and the form factor has to be closer to Google Glass than a traditional HMD, that's where it needs to be imho and in 10yrs time maybe it will

I'd be interest to try one on, but not to purchase its not a product for me.

The use examples in the advert look ridiculous to be honest. I don't get it. For 3D work I guess it could be useful, would I really want to use them over a traditional display setup for regular work? Not really, headsets aren't exactly comfortable for long periods.

If they could incorporate some of this in to Google Glass I could see a use for it, at least that design attempted to be practical.

That's 5-10 years down the line. It always starts big and heavy and then they get lighter, thinner and more ergonomic and less ridiculous.

Maybe, if only Google continued with Google Glass for consumers. maybe they can resurrect them? I think they're still developing an enterprise version aimed at certain industries.

They discontinued the enterprise version as well. It was ahead of its time.

You're right, was announced back in March. Good timing Google. :)

Maybe they should reconsider, especially if Apple find success with this, which they probably will.... Apple fans will buy anything.

Feek is queuing up already.
