Apple vs Samsung, court orders Samsung to show Apple 5 new phones

LOL, patent wars have happened since patents were introduced. Apple haven't started anything and there's nothing abnormal about this situation.

Dont be ridiculous, these patents are an abuse of the system and many of them shouldnt have been allowed to be filed in the first place.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with protecting intellectual property rights but this is just BS.

This is nothing new. The fact many of you think apple started this is pathetic.

Go back in time and look at Microsoft, or any multinational company. This is nothing new. It's been going on for decades and will continue to go on, unless laws ares changed.

Im not saying anyone started it, I couldnt careless who did. What I am saying is it is an abuse of the system and shouldnt be allowed. The rules for filing a patent is clear yet they arent being followed.

Apple win another one.

Apple has won a patent dispute against Motorola Mobility regarding a "slide-to-unlock" feature on smartphones.

The judgement marks Apple's first patent victory over Motorola in any part of the world.

Patent consultant Florian Mueller said the ruling could affect patent disputes involving Android device makers worldwide.

Motorola said it planned to appeal and the judgement would have "no impact" on supply or future sales.

Apple was granted the sliding patent in March 2010
A spokeswoman for the Motorola said: "Today's ruling in the patent litigation brought by Apple in Munich, Germany, concerns a software feature related to phone unlocking in select Motorola devices sold in Germany.

"Motorola has implemented a new design for the feature. Therefore, we expect no impact on current supply or future sales."

Apple said it would not be commenting on the decision.

'Global battle'

Motorola Mobility is in the process of being acquired by Google, and most of its handsets run on the search firm's mobile operating system, Android.

The Android system is Apple's closest rival in the mobile market.

Mr Mueller, a patent expert who has in the past consulted for Microsoft, described the ruling as a "very significant win for Apple against Android".

"After Google closes the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, the Apple-Motorola Mobility dispute will soon gain importance transcending that of the global battle with Samsung," he said.

The disputed patent is in relation to this iPhone feature
While this decision relates solely to activity in the German market, the decision could potentially help Apple with other patent disputes in other parts of the world, Mr Mueller added.

"Apple is already asserting the slide-to-unlock patent in different jurisdictions against all three leading Android device makers and might use it against even more of them going forward."

The patent in question - EP1964022 - relates to the process of unlocking a smartphone by simply swiping a finger from one area of the screen to another.

A second patent ruling, which covers a method of scrolling through pictures in a photo gallery on mobile device, was also due on Thursday but was postponed by the court.

lol@apple lol@peoplwhograntpatentslikethat lol@allthiswaronstupidthinglikethewaytochangepicture man up apple and fight with features/price/products not patents!

man up apple and fight with features/price/products not patents!

why would they do that, no one does that, everyone defends their patents. Some aren't even abiding by FRAND patents.

I do agree the system needs a overhaul.

It seems that any patent will be handed out, it's then up for another company to take it to court and prove the patent rubbish and get it overturned.

Considering I was referring to the current mobile phone "patent war", then yes, it was these "eejits that started this patent fiasco"

It appears my thinking is not unusual going by all the replies after my post....

Edit: It will also be interesting to see how Apple and Google fare if either should decide to take each other on directly. It had been made clear that Apple, via Steve Jobs' statement about taking Android down no matter what it costs, want to take Android down. They just appear reluctant, so far, to take Google on and tackle them directly preferring to indirectly attack them through the handset manufacturers....

Google doesn't own many patents and don't produce or sell the phones. So why would apple take them on.

Apple really didn't start it. Go look at things like Nokia vs Qualcomm over 3G and hands free patents, before iPhone even existed.
Its even described as a patent war in 2005

It's always happened and will continue to happen, Untill the systems changed. All companies do it and apple absolutely did not start it or the trend.

Don't let common sense get in the way of some good old-fashioned sensationalism on the Android forum now :p

I hope someone smacks down Apple, really can't stand them or their products.

I rest my case

When the take over of motorola mobility goes ahead, google will own more than most companies.

Google has been transferring patents to the likes of HTC for court cases.

When, ATM google don't sell the phones, or build them or design them. That is why apple goes after the makers.

Like samsungs looking the "same" had nothing to do with google.

MS and Apple have too much at stake to fight each other over patents, in fact they have bought patents together several times and then both have licensed them. Also, if you look at MS business model of charging for its patents, it actually saves millions on legal bills.
