Apple vs Samsung, court orders Samsung to show Apple 5 new phones

What I cannot really understand is how what appear to be basic functions of a large touchscreen device, required to use the device normally can be patented. I also struggle to comprehend how a large touchscreen device could NOT look as they do now, regardless of Apple's insistence that everyone has copied the iPhone design.

Judge dashes Apple's hopes for a ban on the launch of SGS3 in the US:

Then in an order late on Monday, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, effectively dashed Apple's hopes of stopping the launch of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's new Galaxy S III smartphone, which also runs on Android. Koh had said Apple's push to get a court order blocking the June 21 launch would overload her calendar, given Apple's high-stakes trial over other Samsung devices set for July that she is overseeing.

And rightly so, what justification can they have to block the S3?

It's been designed specifically to avoid Apple patents (so some people believe, anyway).

TBF S voice really is a direct copy of siri in every way, even the UI :p

But nothing wrong with it, since all apple do is copy everyone else anyway :p

Everyone is more or less copying everyone else now - it's inevitable, which is why these patent problems need to be sorted out, or everyone will just end up wasting hundreds of millions of pounds on lawyer fees (I bet they're loving this).

Well, I would argue it was copied from one of the several voice assistant apps already available on Android before Siri, not from Apple...

Well yeah that is true in some ways as Apple did copy androids way of doing things :p

However, apple polished it up a bit more (like they do with everything else they copy from android :p) and there was nothing on android afaik anyway that was the exact same as siri, but after a few days there were plenty of apps popping up on the market copying siri (or should I say improving upon androids way) then and Samsung have kind of taken siri and just put it in there phone without really changing anything or adding something much better to it, they could have at least used a different and better UI for it........

All in all, I couldn't give a toss about voice stuff as to me it is just a gimmick and nothing else :p (although useful for when driving)

In order for me to be truly impressed and actually using it, it has to be to the same level of Jarvis as seen in Iron man! :p :D

on lawyer fees (I bet they're loving this).

No doubt they are! Just milk everything they can as well.

Interestingly the case was thrown out, then a Federal court asked the judge to reconsider it.

Seems Apple might have been applying political pressure.

In any case, Apple have had to put up a bond of over £1m, if they lose the case, that money goes to Samsung to compensate them for the loss of sales from the start of the ban to the judgement.

Also worth noting is that it only affects the old 10.1 tab not the new 10.1 II tab. Which is probably why the bond is so low.

Miss this one below. Apple ordered to pay an unspecified amount to Samsung over patent infringements.
Last week, a Dutch judge ruled that Apple must pay Samsung an unspecified amount in damages over the use of patents relating to the way phones and tablet PCs connect to the internet.

It is quite ridiculous now, seems like getting a ban is similar to getting a better deal on any monthly contract you're tied into.....try again until the person on the other end does what you want.
