Apple vs Samsung, court orders Samsung to show Apple 5 new phones

Apple seem to have reach and influence on the US legal system. They make me sick with their business practices. Since this is a direct attack on a Google flagship phone I hope that Google don't sit back and let Apple get away with this.

Unified search patent?

The patent system is pretty messed up.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provides convenient access to items of information that are related to various descriptors input by a user, by means of a unitary interface which is capable of accessing information in a variety of locations, through a number of different techniques. Using a plurality of heuristic algorithms to operate upon information descriptors input by the user, the present invention locates and displays candidate items of information for selection and/or retrieval. Thus, the advantages of a search engine can be exploited, while listing only relevant object candidate items of information.

In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, methods and apparatuses for locating information in a computer system are described which receive an information identifier, locate at least one item of information based upon the information identifier by means of a plurality of heuristic algorithms each having a separate location scheme, provide at least one candidate information item, and display a representation of the information item.

In accordance with another exemplary embodiment of the present invention, methods and apparatuses for locating information in a computer system are described which input an information identifier, providing the information identifier to locate information in the plurality of locations which comprise the Internet and local storage media, wherein the information located matches the information identifier when applied to a plurality of heuristics, determining at least one candidate item of information based upon the plurality of heuristics, and displaying a representation of the candidate item of information.

In yet another exemplary embodiment of the present invention, methods and apparatuses for displaying information in a computer system is described which includes inputting an information identifier, providing the information identifier to a plurality of heuristics in accordance with a global heuristic, wherein each information identifier is matched to information based upon the plurality of heuristics, receiving at least one candidate item of information based upon the information provided to the heuristics in accordance with the global heuristic, and displaying a representation of the candidate items of information.

Also who on earth needs to write like that.

The first paragraph basically just describes all search engines.

It's really quite unbelievable; the precedent this sets is that no phone can be unlocked by sliding/swiping over an area of the screen. A frankly ludicrous reason for this to be happening, I'd hazard a guess that the ruling was decided in complete absence of any market research...it's like Sony getting a particular model of Samsung TV banned because it uses a button on a remote control to enable and disable standby :/

i know its totally stupid.. they are suing for the shape of the tablet.. i mean i understand if they used a logo or something but now? mobile phone has similar shape tablet has similar shape cmon.. i hope courts just get bored with this and drop all the cases at once :)

The detailed descriptions can give a better idea as the summaries can be pretty vague.

By unified search it's referring to a method of searching local storage, private networks and the internet at once, from one interface. But it also gives examples of various algorithms for making results more relevent, or prioritising certain results.

This just stinks. So it's taken months and the arrival of Jelly Bean to suddenly get this injunction granted. The whiff of corruption is in the air all around me. I have believe that we have reached a stage where the law in the patent battle with Apple has become an ass.

Isn't Google currently under investigation by the ITC for something relating to their patents (and passing them around to various companies in an attempt to counter Apple i assume?), or did I mis understand something?

Here is another crazy patent from what I can see - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18206604

So Microsoft patented Concatenated Messaging on mobiles? I always thought it would have been Nokia as the first phone to do this was the Nokia 3210 IIRC....

So is that the patent that all the other manufacturers have licensed? I don't think we were ever party to what it was until now.

I wonder when MS actually patented it, it may be that it did it a dozen years ago? If so it's almost certainly FRAND (and as MS has freely licensed it to others Motorola haven't a leg to stand on).

I still don't get why Apple get a lot of the hate for this. They're simply using patents which should never have been granted in the first place.

A nice shake-up of the US patent system would fix all this.

Yeah, that's the main problem. The other thing is that the Android phone companies are doing the exact same thing to Apple, but aren't having any success for what are likely two reasons:

1. Their patents aren't as solid
2. Their legal teams aren't as good

It's a flaw of the system, most companies will aggressively try and protect their intellectual property. That's all Apple are doing, and they are playing by the rules set by the laws in these specific countries, nothing more.

Samsung (I think) managed to get the push email function on Apple devics banned in Germany so they are having SOME success.

I am curious to know why Google have not taken on Apple with the blatant rip-off that Apple have done on the Android notifications system

They probably don't have it patented?

The Apple one isn't really much good anyway, it doesn't show the actual notifications in the bar like Android does.
